New Zealand's two outstanding women throwers dominated the second day of the national athletics championships in Wanganui last night.
Shot putter Valerie Vili established a new national allcomers' women's record with her second throw of 19.32m.
It was a dominating performance, beating her previous record of 19.29m set in Auckland in early December last year.
Five of her six attempts were over 19m.
Beatrice Faumuina scored her 12th successive discus victory at the nationals and it included two throws over 62m and a further three over 61m.
Her winning distance was 62.39m.
She was happy enough with her efforts, all of which were better than her winning throw in the recent Australian championships.
Highly promising young 110m hurdler James Mortimer created new championship and national resident records with his comprehensive victory in 14.05sec.
He appears determined to cut the time below the 14sec mark, perhaps as soon as the Australian juniors next month.
The two senior 100m titles were won, as expected, by James Dolphin (North) and Chantal Brunner (Auckland).
Brunner also won the women's long jump but is still short of the world championship qualifying mark after managing 6.64m.
