SYDNEY - New Zealand long jumper Nadia Smith overshadowed her Olympian compatriot Chantal Brunner to finish third at the latest leg of the Telstra A athletics series in Canberra last night.
Smith managed only one legal jump -- 5.99m -- but it was enough to make the podium at the Australian Institute of Sport track.
Brunner suffered a similar fate with her disappointing effort of 5.72m, leaving her sixth and with plenty of improvement needed to qualify for a third Olympics in Athens in August.
Queenslander Bronwyn Thompson won comfortably with a leap of 6.68m.
In other results James Mortimer ran a personal best 14.69sec in finishing sixth in the men's 110m hurdles.
Sprinter James Dolphin ran his fastest time in two years to place fifth in the 200m final, 21.18sec, while Dallas Roberts won the 200m C final in 21.30sec.
Roberts was sixth in the 100m B final 10.78sec while soldier Kim Hogarth, fresh from a stint in Solomon Islands, dusted off the cobwebs with a sixth in the men's 3000m, crossing in 8min 53.35sec.
