Nine personal best performances were achieved by New Zealand athletes on the opening day of the world youth championships in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Kieran Fowler, of Canterbury, is in fourth place in the Octathlon with 3154 points, 235 behind the leader. Fowler had personal bests in the long jump, shot put and 400m. His shot put was the second best in the competition.
Kyle Manu, of Taranaki ,qualified for the semifinal of the 100m after winning his heat in a personal best of 10.82s. A head wind in the semifinal meant he did not progress any further.
