LONDON - Britain's Olympic 4x100m relay gold medallist Darren Campbell was admitted to hospital with a severe viral infection on Thursday.
He will be treated with intravenous antibiotics for the next couple of days, his management company said in a statement.
Campbell, 31, is unlikely to recover in time to compete over 100 or 200m before the final selection date on July 25 for next month's world championships in Helsinki.
He failed to reach the final of the 100m at the national championships last weekend, which doubled up as the British trials for the world championships.
Campbell won bronze in the 100m at the last world championships in Paris two years ago.
