WELLINGTON

Capital Classic Meeting, Newtown Park - 20 January 2017

Hamish Carson made it national title number nine in winning the New Zealand 3000m crown, his third, in 8:05.25. The Rio Olympian had to work hard over the final 100m to hold out an equally determined Eric Speakman who was second in 8:05.73. Daniel Hoy (19) carved nearly 12 seconds off his previous best time finishing third in 8:10.45. Richard Potts holds the New Zealand under 20 record of 8:00.20.

Laura Nagel and Olivia Burne went head to head in the womens 3000m championship. Nagel pulled away over the last lap to win in 9:22.73. It is Nagels first national track title adding to her cross country and road crowns won last year. Burne recorded 9:27.23 with Esther Keown in third in a personal best 9:33.28.

Katherine Marshall dug deep down the inside to out kick Angie Petty in an upset win in the 800m. Marshall ran 2:06.03 with Petty close by in 2:06.37. Katrina Anderson who had a PB in Hastings six days earlier was third in 2:07.69 after challenging for the lead with 200m remaining. Marshall set a meet record breaking Nikki Hamblins 2015 time of 2:06.17.

Alexander Rowe repeated his win in Hastings with a clear victory in the 800m in a meet record of 1:48.42. Sam Bremer was second in 1:52.93 with Pettys husband Sam third in 1:53.25.

Joseph Millar easily collected the sprint double, clearing out in the 100m in 10.49 (+0.6) and 21.30 (-0.7) in the 200m. Zac Topping was second in both in 10.93 and 22.16.

Georgia Hulls was impressive in the 400m winning in a personal best 55.40. She also finished second in the 100m in 12.04, won by Kelsey Berryman in 11.79 (+0.3). Berryman also won the long jump with 5.96m (+0.6).

Hannah OConnor continued her winning way this time over 1500m cutting three seconds off her previous best with a time of 4:28.85. Further PBs were set by Laura Langley (19) in the 3000m race walk in 13:57.55, just 16 seconds outside Kate Newitts New Zealand under 20 record, Anna Percy in the 400m hurdles in 60.44, Nick Palmer with 19.01m with the 5kg shot, Katie Thompson 5.63m (-0.8) in the long jump and Ellie Hurley-Langton 10.22m (+0.1) in the triple jump. Jack Henry won the 110m hurdles 14.48 (+2.0) from James Sandilands 14.77m. Zachary Nunis of Australia TJ 14.81m (+0.2) from Scott Thomson 14.25m (+1.8). Anna Thomson won the triple jump on a count back from Ashleigh Bennett both clearing 11.61m both with a wind reading of -1.2. Jared Lautenslager followed up his 3000m title three days earlier with a win in the under 20 1500m in 3:59.93.

Maddison-Lee Wesche was out to a PB and meet record of 15.26m in the shot put beating previous meet record holder Te Rina Keenan who threw 14.97m better than her 2015 record of 14.53m. Keenan won the discus with 54.02m and Marshall Hall secured the mens discus with 53.72m.

WANGANUI

Cooks Classic, Cooks Gardens - 17 January 2017

Hannah OConnor in her usual fashion of leading from start to finish collected the New Zealand junior womens 3000m title in 9:33.40, just over five seconds outside her personal best. Phoebe McKnight was second in 9:56.13 with Charli Miller third in 10:00.90. Jared Lautenslagers finishing kick over the final 200m won him the junior mens 3000m title in 8:37.96. Christian Conder also charged home well to claim second in 8:39.61 and Angus White was third in 8:40.07. James Uhlenberg was fourth in 8:41.68. Despite solid pacing from Mitchell Small and Eric Speakman a sub four minute mile didnt eventuate. Australian runners swept the placings, Douglas Hamerlok winning in 4:04.45 from fast finishing Joshua Torley 4:04.73 and Andre Waring 4:07.64. Tessa Hunt of Wellington won the womens mile in 5:04.89.

Kelsey Berryman was out to a wind assisted 6.18m in the long jump. Zachary Nunis of Australia won the mens long jump with 6.96m (+0.5) from Waikatos Christopher Goodwin 6.75m (+0.5). Mathew Walsh was third in the long jump 6.47m (+2.0) and second to Nunis in the triple jump with 14.24m (+3.2). Lexi Maples had a PB 4kg shot put of 11.64m.

Ben Langton-Burnell sent the javelin out to 77.88m and Tori Peeters 52.90m in the womens javelin. Joseph Millar into the face of a 4.00mps head wind clocked 21.70 in the 200m to head in Zac Topping 22.22 and Nick Smith 22.38. Georgia Hulls won the womens 200m in 24.69 (-3.6). Hulls combined with Jade Henley-Smith to win the 2 x 100m relay in 24.19 while Topping and Smith won their relay in 21.58. Under 18 100m winners were James Robertson 11.89 (-3.8) and Lauren Henry 12.63 (-3.9). Grace Godfrey ran a PB 58.42 to win the 400m from Maria Sartin also in a PB of 58.83. Josh Ledger was third in the mens 400m in 48.94, a shade outside his PB. Deluca Lawson-Matthew of Australia won in 48.05 from compatriot Alex Rowe 48.11.

AUCKLAND

Athletics Auckland Meeting, Mt Smart Stadium - 21 January 2017

Battling a strong head wind Joshua Hawkins won the 110m hurdles in 14.91. William Smart gave a good account of himself in the windy conditions winning the 100m in 11.42 from former schools champion Jordan Bolland who recorded 11.48 and Rio Paralympian double gold medallist Liam Malone who clocked 12.02. James Guthrie-Croft won the second division 100m in 11.37. Mariam Cisse dominated the womens sprints winning the 60m in 8.12 and the 100m in 13.22 both into a solid head wind. Megan Kikuchi covered the 400m in 57.00 and Liam Haddock was a clear winner of his 400m in 54.32. Ebuka Okpala won the long jump with a leap of 6.56m and Greer Noble-Tawhai was out to 5.48m.

Sola Power Throwers Meeting, Corner Randwick Road and Whites Line East, Moera Lower Hutt - 21 January 2017

Jacko Gill laid down the gauntlet to Tom Walsh in next months Big Shot in Christchurch with a personal best and London World Championships shot put qualifier of 21.01m. Gill started with 19.88m, improved to 20.15m followed by 20.10m, 20.00m, 20.11m and unleashed the winner in the final round. His previous best was 20.83m in last years Big Shot. Gill who finished ninth at the Rio Olympic Games, despite suffering from a foot injury, was delighted with his performance.

"Im really happy with this result, its been quite a tough couple of weeks, Ive had a bit of flu, and a lot of other tough things.

"The result means a lot to me, everyone around me has helped me a lot, family especially and its been really special that everyones been there and believed in me and its great to finally get that 21 metre throw," said Gill.

He only had three days off after the Rio Olympic Games.

"But it was straight back into the gym as I kind of feel a bit sad when I dont train as its what I do I love it and its hard to get away from it, I enjoy training and Ive been training very hard," he added.

Gill decided to let the Jones fracture of the foot heal by itself without having surgery.

"The foot is pretty good, the people wanted me to have surgery but I decided against it and let it heal naturally and the foots holding up nicely."

Gill was also thinking of his grandfather while competing.

"My grandad is a little bit sick at the moment and hes been fighting and doing a great job and that 21 metres throw was for him and I hope I did him proud."

Nick Palmer was out to 18.41m with the 5kg shot and 56.14m in the 5kg HT. Nathaniel Sulupo 6kg SP 16.80m and 1.75kg DT 52.00m. Adam Miller 7.26kg HT 48.41m, Tom Quinn 7.26kg HT 45.58m. Ben Power 6kg HT 44.56m. Maddison-Lee Wesche had a PB of 15.26m in the 4kg shot for the second day in a row. Te Rina Keenan 14.78m SP and 55.46m DT. Lauren Bruce 42.15m DT and 52.92m HT.
