UNITED KINGDOM

World Para Athletics Championships, London - 14/23 July 2017

New Zealand struck its first medal of the 2017 Para Athletics World Championships in London on Sunday morning NZ time, with Holly Robinson firing her javelin out to 42.41m, finishing a close second to Great Britain's Hollie Arnold who threw 43.02m

The result in the Queen Elizabeth London Olympic Stadium was a repeat of the 2016 Rio Paralympics where Arnold edged Robinson 43.01m to 41.22m.

Robinson (F46 classification), performed right up to her best, making a valiant effort to overhaul Arnold on the last throw of the competition. Her sixth attempt came within 0.61m of the British athlete.

Robinsons first five attempts were 39.91, 38.92, 38.47, 41.83 and 40.89.

Waikato Bay of Plenty Cross Country Championships, Waipuna Park - 15 July 2017

Steve Rees-Jones of Cambridge won the senior 10km title in 34:35 from Russ Best 35:16 and Andrew Lloyd 37:38. Sally Gibbs outshone her younger rivals to win the senior womens 10km title in 40:41. Sarah Gardner was second in 41:37 with Malesa McNearney third in 42:12. Mike Causer MM45-49 headed in the master men 8km in 30:27 from Adrian Lysaght MM40-44 30:45 and Lance Brew MM35-39 30:57. John Crane won the MM50-54 in 31:44 and Bruce Edwards the MM55-59 in 31:56. Trevor Ogilvie won the MM65-69 6km in 27:07 and Bridget Ray in the MW 55-59 was the fastest master over 6km in 27:00. Charli Miller fresh from her success in the steeplechase and 1500m at the Oceania Championships in Fiji won the U/18 4km in 15:27, 21 seconds ahead of Aimee Ferguson. Secondary schools champion Sam Tanner won the U/18 6km in 20:55 nearly a minute faster than William Sinclair. The B15 3km went to Mathijs Wetzels in 10:18, the G15 3km to Hannah Gapes in 11:37, B13 2km to Ian Pugh in 7:18 and the G13 2km to Lulu Johnson in 7:53.

HASTINGS

Hawkes Bay Gisborne Cross Country Championships, Havelock North High School - 15 July 2017

Matthew Taylor followed up his second placing to Jono Jackson in the North Island championship and a win over 5km at last weekends Wellington championships to win the HBG senior title in 36:15 for the 10km. The ex-Lindisfarne College, Palmerston North based Hastings Harrier had a close battle with Napier rival Lucas Duross and it was only decided in the final kilometre with Taylor proving the stronger. Duross was second in 36:28 and Steve Charles third in 39:40. Dulia Daly won the womens title in 46:51, from Monica Burnard 47:17 and Laura Langley 51:15. Bradley Christison won the U/20 8km in 29:52 from Zach Manning and Thomas Mackisack. Graeme Buscke was through first in the master mens 8km in 30:06, four seconds ahead of Steve Morrow. Claudia Layton, ex Napier and now with Wellington Harriers won the U/20 6km in 26:43 while Nadine McKinnon was the best of the masters over the same distance in 29:50. Kane Elms won the U/18 6km in 21:31 and Ginny Gibbs the U/18 4km in 17:16. Briana Irving won the G16 4km in 16:19, Oliver Marshall the B16 in 14:30 from Max Taylor 14:51, Josh Abel the B14 4km in 16:10 from Cameron Potts 16:26 and LeSharn Anderson was a convincing winner of the G14 4km in 17:16.

HAWERA

Taranaki Cross Country Championships, Hawera Showgrounds - 15 July 2017

Nathan Foley took out the senior mens 10km in a time of 37:22 followed by Robbie Rawles in 39:30. The 8km masters men race was won by Robin Grant in a time of 32:41 with Richard Brewer 33:52 and Murray Hodson 35:32 coming in second and third respectively. The U/20 mens 8km was won by Chris Devaney in a time of 28:22 and the U/18 mens 6km saw Jack Elliot 20:51 take the victory from Max Erkes 21:05 and Jason Bond 22:57. The masters women 6km was taken out by Kirstin Foley in 25:41 followed by Cheryl Leuthart 28:59 and a tie for third between Nic Carver and Karen Gillum Green 29:46. The U/18 womens 4km saw Emma Carver 17:33 take the gong with Tessa Honeyfield 19:07 and Dana Phelen 20:45 the next two home. Albie Jane was the first master home in the mens 4km walk in a time of 26:18 followed by Rodney Gillum in 27:15 while Gaylene Anderson led in the masters women in 29:32 followed closely by Laura Kehely (U/18) in 30:11.

WANGANUI

Manawatu Wanganui Cross Country Championships, Bason Botanic Gardens, Westmere - 15 July 2017

Jake Jackson-Grammer won the senior men from David Lovelock. Kara Macdermid took out the senior womens title. Christian Conder won the U/20 and Benjamin Wall the U/18 title.

NELSON

Tasman Cross Country Championships, Branford Park - 15 July 2017

Craig Lautenslager returned a dozen years adrift from his last race at Branford Park and finally got the victory that eluded him in his youth. But the resounding win in the senior 10km was more about preparation for a bigger race than redemption. Lautenslager finished seventh as a year five student and fifth in year six at Nelson inter-schools meets at Branford and his St. Josephs team was an also-ran at an intermediate schools relay event. A foot taller and miles faster, Lautenslager covered the slippery, winding course in 31:08 and finished more than two minutes ahead of runner-up Ryan McAlister of Blenheim. Lautenslager was followed by his brother Jared, who won the M20 8km race in 25:49, and his mother, Debbie, who won the 50-64 age grade 6km race in 28:58. The Dunbar family also had a triumphant day - Kathy winning the womens masters 6km in 23:06 and husband David won the mens masters 8km in 28:50. Kalani Sheridan took out the M18 6km in 19:18. Stu Hodgkiss won the mens 50-64 8km race in 31:33, Simon Biss the 65 and over 6km in 30:06, and Peter Hague the 6k race-walk in 38:05 after a good tussle with Daryl Nish. Eloise Beattie fought off Emily Dalton to win the W18 4km race in 15:58, Fran Kerse won the womens 65 and over 4km in 20:07, and Elaine Llewellen won the womens 6km race-walk in 46:40. Jamie Wallis came from behind to win the B15 3km race in 9:53 just ahead of Luke Clatworthy, whose brothers Adam and Joseph went 1-2 in the B13 2km.

CHRISTCHURCH

Canterbury Cross Country Championships, Halswell Quarry - 15 July 2017

Daniel Balchin retained his senior title winning the 10km championship in 32:42, a minute clear of Malcolm Hodge. Ben Musson was third in 33:58. Balchins winning time last year was 31:05. Jean Kozyniak won the womens 10km in 38:33 from Kiri Atkin 38:57 and Sabrina Grogan 39:49. Chris Mardon was the best of the masters over 8km in 27:47, David Fitch clocked 28:23 and Allan Staite 29:32. In the masters 6km Mike Summerlee won his age group in 25:53, Michael Bond recorded 29:26 and Iain Chinnery 31:40. Mitchell Small won the U/20 8km in 26:15 from Connor Melton 26:15 and Christopher Dryden 26:49. The U/18 6km went to Andres Hernandez in 20:38 19 seconds ahead of Taonga Mbambo with Dion Houston third in 20:59. Johanna Buick ran the fastest masters 6km in 24:28, Maggie Chorley 24:42 and Tracy Croft 25:20. The U/20 6km title went to Harriet Bush 24:36 from Ari Graham 24:42. Lily Trotter won the U/18 4km in 15:18 from Lydia Robinson 16:12. William Taylor won the B14 4km in 14:01 and Sophie Williamson the G14 3km in 11:48.

DUNEDIN

Otago Cross Country Championships, Waikouaiti Race Course - 15 July 2017

Stafford Thompson won the senior 10km in 36:41, Kirk Madgwick was second in 36:58 and Blair Martin third in 37:19. Bridget Thompson won the senior womens 10km in 46:19 from Kalli Green 49:51. Robbie Johnston won the masters 8km in 30:52 and Glen Ferguson ran 31:21. Hamish McKinlay won the U/20 8km in 33:36, 12 seconds ahead of Ben Rowley. Drew Cairney won the U/18 6km in 22:04 and Oliver Young clocked 11:54 in the B15 3km. Claire Anderton was the fastest in the master women 6km in 27:41, Heather Evans recorded 28:02 and Louisa Andrew 28:44. The U/20 6km went to Sophie Smith in 26:06, Caitlin ODonnell won the U/18 4km in 20:18 and Jordan Evans-Tobata won the G15 3km in 13:52.
