AUCKLAND
Athletics Auckland Meeting and North Island Combined Events Championships, Mt Smart Stadium - 11/12 November 2017
London world championships representative Joseph Millar had his first outing of the season posting comfortable victories in the 100m 10.60 (+0.3) and in the 200m 21.40 (-0.8). Millar had a great previous season culminating with New Zealand records of 10.18 and 20.37 at the national championships in Hamilton.
Millar said that he was hoping to go a bit quicker first up.
"First races up this season, times werent very quick, obviously still having issues with the blocks as well as a few of the other guys.
"But just learning to put the race back together and putting the training into a race," he said.
The four times national 100 and 200m champion added that training had gone well since London.
"Ive had to rejig the programme and peak a lot earlier than I was intending, but it leads back to the best out of a bad situation, and Ill see if I can have a season like the last one and do it all again."
"By going to the world champs it unqualified me for the Gold Coast, so it means Ive got to do it all again," he added.
The performance standards for Gold Coast are 10.40 and 20.80.
National youth sprint champion James Guthrie-Croft was second in the 100m in 10.99.
The 2016 national womens 100m champion Rochelle Coster likewise had her first race of the season over 100m hurdles. Coster clocked 13.88 (-0.8) and in a later attempt 13.99 (-1.6).
Coster who has a best of 13.10 said it was good to kick off the season.
"First race so happy to get the nerves out of the way and start my way on the campaign," she said.
"My training has been going pretty well, Ive had a decent winter so I think Ive just got to make sure I get my speed coming through now."
Although it would be good to win a hurdles title it is the Gold Coast that beckons.
"A Commonwealth Games qualifier would be even better."
The standard set in the hurdles for the Games is 13.35.
Olly Parkinson national youth 110m and 300m hurdles champion recorded 14.88 (-0.9) over the 914mm 110m hurdles.
Natasha Eady who gained a silver in the national junior womens 100m hurdles last season has come out strong in the sprints winning the senior womens 100m and 200m. The 19 year old headed in Anita McLaren in the 100m in 12.44 (-1.5) and Portia Bing in the 200m in 25.69 (-1.2).
Eady said that she needs to work on her starts.
"My technique when running the actual sprint is pretty alright but the starts are where I really need to work on.
"The 100 felt great, the 200 a bit iffy but theres lots to work on and hopefully a good season ahead," she said.
"The aim this season is consistent sub twelves for the 100 and I really want to work on the hurdles as well.
"In the future Ill be doing hurdles at most comps and Im really excited to see how I go in those."
Michael Dawson second in last seasons national 800m showed good early season form with his third best ever 800m of 1:53.51, winning from Flynn Palmer 1:57.56. Master runner Ian Calder (60) from Whangarei ran the 800m in 2:17.02. Diana Ismagilova was just 10cm short of her best in the triple jump with 11.75m (-0.2).
