POLAND

IAAF World Junior Championships, Zawisza Stadium, Bydgoszcz - 19/24 July 2016

Zoe Hobbs and James Preston highlighted New Zealands representation at the Championships setting New Zealand records in their respective events. In the heats of the 100m Hobbs clipped two hundredths of a second off Briar Toops long standing national under 20 and under 19 record with her time of 11.53. Preston in the semi-final of the 800m with a time of 1:48.06 broke Jason Stewarts under 20 record of 1:48.73.

A personal best was also set by Alison Andrews-Paul in the 800m with a time of 2:06.32. Olivia Burdon was the only athlete to make the final of their event finishing 12th in the 1500m in 4:25.94.

IAAF Diamond League, Anniversary Games, The Stadium Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park London - 23 July 2016

Tom Walsh was second in the shot with his career fourth best performance of 21.54m. His series was 20.64, 21.54, 20.89, 21.38, 21.01, 20.83. Joe Kovacs of USA won with22.04m. Eliza McCartney was third in the pole vault clearing 4.62m on her third attempt. Katerina Stefanidi of Greece won with a height of 4.80m and Yarisley Silva of Cuba was second with 4.72m. Angie Petty was sixth in the 800m in 2:00.92 won by British runner Shelayna Oskan-Clarke in 1:59.46.

HUNGARY

Istvan Gyulai Memorial, Szekesfehervar - 18 July 2016

Valerie Adams won the shot put with 20.19m, a 14cm improvement on her performance in Monaco three days earlier. It was a meet record and seasons best for Adams. Her series was 19.00, 20.14, 19.80, 20.05, x, 20.19. Christina Schwanitz of Germany was second with 20.14m and Michelle Carter of USA third with 19.56m.

IRELAND

Katherine Marshall 800m 2:02.70 PB (4), Nikki Hamblin mile 4:31.16 PB (5), Brad Mathas 800m 1:50.60 (11), Cameron French 400m H 50.25 (4).

Eliza McCartney was second in the pole vault with 4.53m.

USA

Hardrock 100 mile Ultra-Marathon, Silverton Colorado - 15/16 July 2016

Anna Frost, national mountain running champion in 2010, won the gruelling Hardrock event for the second year in a row. Frost (34) completed the 160km, which includes a 10km climb and is run on 4WD roads and dirt trails in Colorados San Juan Range in 29:02:09, 40 minutes slower than her winning time last year. The Dunedin runner finished 34 minutes ahead of Emma Roca of Spain.

AUCKLAND

Athletics Auckland Cross Country Championships, Barry Curtis Park East Tamaki - 23 July 2016

Jono Jackson made it title number three adding to his senior cross country titles won in 2013 and 2014 which were also raced at the Barry Curtis Park. In windy muddy conditions Jackson drove hard from the start and increased his lead on each of the five laps. Aaron Pulford started and held second over the first half before withdrawing. Jackson ran an impressive 33:18 for the 10km. Mike Banks was second in 34:08 with Peter Wheeler heading in Alex Parlane by 26 seconds for third. Jackson said that the course suited his training over the last week.

"Ive been training on the sloppy stuff so I sort of felt my rhythm on the mud. It really divides the different styles of running, some people just dig themselves into a hole, but I got a bit of practice on it," he said.

The New Zealand championships will be held in two weeks time on the Auckland Domain where similar conditions are expected.

"I trained on the Domain course last week and its pretty much sloppy if not sloppier than this course so todays win is good practice for the nationals. The nationals are going to be a bit of a mud-fest" said Jackson.

Ashleigh Williams came through on the last lap to pass leader Olivia Burne who had lost her shoe in the mud to win the senior womens 10km title in 39:27. Williams had slogged it out with Sarah Drought behind Burne for most of the race. Drought was second in 39:37 with Burne clutching her shoes finishing third in 39:58. Esther Keown was fourth in 40:02.

Williams was pleased with her run leading into the nationals.

"It was very muddy and the wind was quite big, but I felt quite good. Fingers crossed now for the nationals. It is where I train most of the time so it will be familiar territory," she said.

Drought, national womens road champion in 2012 has moved to Auckland for a year from Wellington for work.

"I was very happy with the run, it was pretty tough out there so the plan was to hold in there and keep something in the tank to finish strongly. Ill run the national cross country and then look to road," said Drought.

Andrew Catley, who has been under coach David Drummond for the last ten years and has steadily improved had a major break-through winning the junior mens 8km in 28:44. Daniel Hintz of Tauranga was second in 29:16.

Catley was delighted to win and looks forward to the New Zealand championships.

"At the beginning of the season I was injured and Ive been back about a month now training hard running about 100km a week. It is the first 8km race Ive run and it was pretty muddy and windy," he said.

Grace wood won the junior womens 6km in 24:56, Georgia Clode took out the U/18 4km in 16:28 and Jacob Holmes after a close race with Isaiah Priddey won the U/18 6km in 21:09. They were neck and neck heading into the finishing straight but Priddey skidded over in the mud on the final bend and had to settle for second in 21:17. Sasha Daniels just pipped Chris Robb on the line in the master mens 8km, both credited with a time of 29:32. Anna McRae had the master womens 6km to herself running 26:04. Zane Powell continued to dominate the under 15 while the under 15 girls went to Natalya Carter.

Harry Kerr Centennial Race Walking Meeting, Mt Smart Stadium, 17 July: Laura Langley of Napier went under the U20 and U19 New Zealand 10,000m race walking record of 49:22, bettering Courtney Ruskes 49:40.78 U20 and Amanda Gorsts 51:02.74 U19 records.

Athletics Wellington Cross Country Championships, Grenada North Park - 24 July 2016

Tim Hodge won the senior mens title over 10km in 31:34. Nathan Tse was second in 31:46 followed by Ryan McAlister in 32:10 and Stephen Day in 32:40. Brendon Blacklaws won the 5km race in 16:30. Andrea Peat won the senior women 10km in 39:48 and Amanda Broughton the 5km in 18:29. Master winners were 40+ Daniel Clendon 10km 33:18, Daniel Nixon 5km 15:39, 50+ Peter Stevens 10km 35:33, Dallas McCallum 5km 16:28, 60+ Tony Price 10km 39:27, Paul Sharp 5km 18:16. Master women 40+ Lindsay Barwick 10km 42:22, Renae Creser 5km 20:03, 50+ Frances Spite 10km 55:15, Victoria Humphries 5km 20:10, 60+ Michele Allison 5km 22:21.

Stefan Przychodzko won the U/20 7.5km in 23:49 from Harry Burnard 24:26 and Callum Stewart 25:24. The U/18 5km went to Logan Slee 15:35, 10 seconds ahead of Liam Chesney with Seamus Kane third in 15:54. Finn Seeds won the U/15 2.5km in 8:06. Samantha Jordan U/20 5km 20:14, Bridie Edwards U/18 4km 14:24, Maali Kyle-Ford G15 2.5km 8:59.

NELSON

Athletics Tasman Cross Country Championships, Branford Park - 23 July 2016

Sophie Smith won the W20 6km in 24:03 from Sami Jordan. Paula Canning on the senior womens 8km in 32:36 with Kathy Dunbar second in 34:25. Beth Versey won the W18 4km in 16:58. The M20 winner was Hayden Squance 30:39 for 8km while Kalani Sheridan led in the M18 6km in 21:08. Sam Mead was second in 21:39. Peter Versey won the masters 8km in 30:44 from Brian Kemp 30:55. Joeline Jones won the master women 6km in 28:21 and Debbie Lautenslager the 50+ 6km in 29:39.

CHRISTCHURCH

Athletics Canterbury Cross Country Championships, Halswell Quarry - 23 July 2016

Daniel Balchin won the Canterbury senior mens title running 31:05 for the 10km to beat Oska Inkster-Baynes by five seconds. Ben Musson was third in 32:15. Rosa Flanagan won the womens title over 8km in 28:42. Gabrielle Gray was second in 30:08 with Rio bound 5000m runner Lucy Oliver third in 30:44. Mark Bailey won the masters 8km in 25:46 and Johanna Buick was the best of the master women recoding 23:39 for 6km. Matthew Prest won the JM 8km in 25:35 from Sean Eustace 25:59 and Thomas Moulai 26:14. Mairi Law won the JW 6km in 25:35. Lily Trotter won the YW 4km in 14:31 with Liliana Braun second in 14:39 and Amelia Persson third in 14:56. Mitchell Small won the YM 6km in 18:57.

DUNEDIN

Athletics Otago Cross Country Championships, Waikouaiti Race Course - 23 July 2016

Katrina Andrew won the senior womens 10km in 40:03. Jean Kozyniak was second in 41:01. Cameron Avery won the senior men 10km in 33:07 from Blair Martin 34:30 and Samuel Bremer 34:52. Robbie Johnston was the best of the master men covering the 8km in 28:57, Neale McLanachan was next in 29:02. Peter Fitzgerald won the 50+ in 30:32. The master women 6km was won by Christine Montgomery in 25:37 from Heather Evans 25:52. Dalise Sanderson won the 50+ in 30:33. Oliver Chignell M20 8km 26:49, Hannah English W20 6km 24:58, Drew Cairney M18 6km 21:33, W18 4km Kate Higham 17:05.

TE ANAU

Athletics Southland Road Championships - 23 July 2016

Te Anau was a new course and new location, taking the championship away from Invercargills Queens Park for the first time in a number of years. The 2km, flat loop course proved popular with the runners with 10km winner Jack Beaumont saying it should be good for fast times if a national event was held there. Beaumont didnt quite make the time we wanted, running 31:53. A period of heavy training towards the World Mountain Championships has taken the sting out of his legs. Local Dwight Grieve was second home in 34:06 and first in the masters men. Kelly McSoriley and Glen McLeay (both St Pauls) took the MM silver and bronze while Fiordlands Alex Jackson the silver for open men and Grant Baker bronze. Gary Kirkman (Fiordland) won over 50s title ahead of Graham Neilson (St Pauls). Angela Ryan (St Pauls) opted for the senior 10km distance rather than the masters women 5km, winning in 44:43 with Debbie Telfer claiming masters woman title in 20:51. MU18 was a St Pauls trifecta: Jack McNaughton (16:48) heading in Buddy Small and Jaxon Taylor for the 5km. Woman U18 5km was won by Briana Miller (Gore) ahead of Bailey McColl (St Pauls) and Dyani Shepherd Oates (Fiord). Alan Wilson-Woodford first MU20 8km, Tim Baker (Winton) second and Josh Taylor (St Pauls) third. Nicole Green (Fiord) won U13 girls 2km and Tylah Rose Wilson-Woodford U15 3km.
