Kate Newitt, of Christchurch, finished well down the field and four minutes behind the winner, but still managed to set national age-group records in the 5000m track walk at the world youth athletics championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
The 17-year-old finished 18th in 24m 20.26s, 44s better than her previous best time, and set national records in the 18 and 19 age bracket.
The race was won by Russia's Tatyana Kalmykova in 20m 28.05s. Michael Whitehead did not make the final of the 800m but produced a personal best of 1m 53.10s to finish seventh in his semifinal.
