Daniel Natusch, of Manawatu-Wanganui, clocked a personal best 21.68s to qualify for the 200m semifinal on day four of the world youth track and field championships in Marrakesh, Morocco.
He repeated the time in the semifinal, but missed the cut for the final.
Natusch later joined William Maber, Kyle Manu and Andrew Underwood in the medley relay, where they recorded their best time - 1m 55.96s.
Vanessa Hurley, of Auckland, was 12th in the shot-put final with a throw of 11.67m.
Other personal bests were set by Fiona Morrison, of Canterbury, with 14.15s in the 100m hurdles, Stacey Linderboom, of North Harbour, 24.91s in the heats of the 200m, and Amanda Aldridge's 2m 26.22s in the heptathlon 800m.
