New Zealand sprinter James Mortimer could not improve on his personal best time in the heats as he finished 14th in the 100m at the world junior athletics championships in Kingston, Jamaica, yesterday.
Mortimer was seventh in his semifinal in a time of 10.67s, slower than the 10.55s he set in his heat, which was just 0.03s outside the national junior record.
Mortimer's ranking of 14th was the best finish in the event by a New Zealander since Dean Wise made the final in 1996.
The final was won by Trinidad and Tobago's Darrel Brown in 10.10s.
Mortimer was the only New Zealander competing on day two of the event.
Today, 200m runners April Brough and Hayden Townsend make their first appearances.
Brough finished fifth at last year's world under-18 championships and Townsend was a semifinalist.
New Zealand's big hope at these championships, Valerie Adams, has the qualifying rounds for the shot put tomorrow.
