Athletics: McCartney back to health for first world meet

Any illness fears for Eliza McCartney have been allayed ahead of her first major senior international meet.

The in-form pole vaulter was suffering a cold before leaving New Zealand for the World Indoor Championships in Portland.

But Athletics New Zealand high performance manager Scott Goodman says McCartney's much better now.

He says McCartney is over her cold, although she was puffed towards the end of her run up in their first training session.

In what will be her first big international meet, Goodman says the team will give her a special reception.

He says the older athletes will welcome her to the team and it's good to have the team together to build morale.

McCartney and shotputters Jacko Gill and Tom Walsh have taken in the venue for the champs and had the opportunity to train there.

Goodman says their target is two medals including four top eight finishes, but barring injuries they should get five top eights.

McCartney is the first kiwi to compete, tomorrow afternoon.
