Whangaparaoa 17-year-old Bevan Dobbs recently won the US Open modern pentathlon championship title.
Dobbs competed against 18 top young athletes from five countries and came out on top in the Youth A (under-19) competition.
The one-day competition was held in Colorado Springs, in the shadow of Pike's Peak in the Rocky Mountains at an altitude of 1800m, adding another dimension of difficulty to the demands of the disciplines of modern pentathlon, which include swimming, fencing, and a combined event of running and shooting.
