KEY POINTS:
Greek sprinter Katerina Thanou has been awarded the silver medal from the 100m at the 2001 world championships after Marion Jones' doping admission.
Jones finished second in Edmonton but all her results since September 2000 have been expunged because of doping. Thanou was third in the race, which was won by Zhanna Block of Ukraine.
Thanou was banned for two years after missing a third drug test on the eve of the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The International Association of Athletics Federations was reluctant to upgrade her to the Emdonton silver. "Legally, we had no other choice," IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said.
"There was no evidence of Thanou committing any doping offence during the period in question, which leaves us with no alternative but to award the medal. "
