Walter Dix spoiled Tyson Gay's return when he won the 200m at the Prefontaine Classic in 19.72 seconds yesterday.
Gay timed 19.76. He has not competed since May because of a hamstring injury.
The Prefontaine was a first step towards challenging Usain Bolt's dominance in the 100 and 200.
Bolt, the world record-holder in both events, did not compete at the meet in Eugene, Oregon, part of the elite IAAF Diamond League series.
