Collegiate champion Kerron Clement became the seventh fastest 400m hurdler in history when he won the US championships title in 47.24s yesterday.
The 19-year-old, who broke Michael Johnson's indoor 400m world record in March, pulled away from runner-up Bershawn Jackson before the last hurdle and powered on to victory.
Clement's time was the fastest in seven years.
Jackson clocked 47.80s for second place and James Carter took third in 48.03s.
