Oamaru and New Zealand triathlete Mike Sandri rates his recent performance at the ITU Triathlon World Championships in Beijing as one of the biggest highlights in his career.
Sandri exceeded even his own expectations, finishing ninth in the 45-49-year class competing against 80 other athletes from all over the world.
"It is pretty much one of the biggest highlights of my career.
"I went out there and ran my own race because you can't worry about the others. I just went out there and did the best I could do on the day," he said.
Sandri said he was especially pleased because his class can be one of the most competitive, with some of the top athletes in the division matching those of the elite class.
