Kenenisa Bekele, whose training has been disrupted by the tragic death of his fiancee this year, retained his world cross-country men's short course title in St Etienne, France.
The 22-year-old Ethiopian, aiming to win the short and long course titles for the fourth consecutive year, steadily increased his lead to win in 11 minutes 33 seconds, with Kenyan's Abraham Chebii and Isaac Kiprono Songkok in second and third place, respectively.
Tirunesh Dibaba (Ethiopia) won the women's long course race over 8km.
