Valerie Adams was out to 19.43 metres in the qualifying round of the Shot Put competition at the World Indoor Champs in Istanbul, Turkey.
Adams needed just one attempt to reach the automatic qualifying distance of 18.60 metres and finish as the top qualifier.
Arch rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk from Belarus had the second longest qualifying throw at 19.26 metres, followed by American Jillian Camarena-Williams with 19.11 metres.
The top eight are now through to the final which will start at 5.10am (NZ time) on Sunday.
