"2010 was a huge year for me that I was not really expecting. My win at the world junior athletic champs I think took everyone by surprise. My school, while celebrating the success, didn't pressure me into things I was not comfortable with," said Gill, 20, with eyes on what he can do at the Rio Olympics next year.
"Takapuna Grammar was proud of me and I received a haka from my peers when I returned to school. Man, was that special. How I felt was indescribable and will never be forgotten."
The ASB awards night was nerve-racking and exciting for Gill.
"I was very nervous on the night of the awards and dreading going up on stage.
"I met so many people, but probably the amazing thing was just how many young sportspeople there were that had achieved so many amazing performances."
Since then Gill has gone on to defend his world junior title, which he achieved in 2012 in Spain, and qualify for the Rio Olympics.
"Certainly breaking the world junior record (under-20) and becoming the first athlete to break the 23m barrier," says Gill, when picking his career highlights so far.
Rob Loe (Westlake BHS) 2012
Rob Loe was the second of four ASB Awards supreme winners out of Westlake BHS.
He was another to represent his country at the highest level while still at school.
"2009 was a very busy year for me and definitely a highlight in my basketball career. I believe we won the Auckland champs and nationals. I actually missed a lot of the regular season because I was away with the Junior Tall Blacks and then the Tall Blacks," says Loe, 24, who is about to line up for Limburg United in the Belgian league.
In that 2009 Junior Tall Blacks side, the forward led the Kiwi scorers and rebounders.
"I think I missed about two and a half months of school that year because I was away with basketball, but I took work away with me and managed to get enough done so I wasn't too far behind when I got back to school," recalls Loe.
Some star-studded basketballers have come through Westlake BHS. Loe was just one of several in recent times.
"Tom [Abercrombie] finished my third form year when we won our first national champs and Corey Webster finished the year after when we won again. I think Westlake also won two years after 2009 with Tai Webster and Jack Salt, so the programme has been strong for quite a few years now."
He carries only fond memories of the ASB awards night. He had already won the boys' basketball award, as he had done in 2008-09.
"The awards night was a fun night that I got to spend with my parents and friends from school. It's great looking back now and seeing people that won awards that night playing for other national teams and it shows how big sports are in Auckland high schools."
Nominations for the 2015 ASB YSPOTY Awards are still open but should be submitted by 5pm today. Further information, along with the chart of eligibility, is available on www.collegesport.co.nz.
