New Zealand took the honours in the first session of the second test against England at Hagley Oval today.

It wasn't quite the same dominance as the hosts exerted over England at Eden Park, where the English were gone for 58 in 20.4 overs. And yet England might feel they had survived reasonably well in the first session.

But at lunch England were 70 for two with opener Mark Stoneman, leading a charmed life, on 28 and captain Joe Root on 20.

Having won the second toss of the series, captain Kane Williamson - the newly confirmed captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the Indian Premier League, replacing disgraced Australian David Warner – wanted to make as much use of the early moisture in the pitch.
His bowlers duly delivered in an impressive performance.

Trent Boult gave New Zealand the perfect start, with the near-perfect ball.

The fourth ball of his second over, jagged away to beat Alastair Cook and hit his off stump.

Cook, the sixth top alltime test runmaker and easily England's best ever, has made 5, 2, 2 in this series.

Stoneman repeatedly played and missed but somehow survived against Boult and Tim Southee.

James Vince did for a time too.

Brought in as one of three changes for the test from Eden Park, on eight he got through a DRS call from Southee, where both a catch to slips and an lbw were assessed.

There were a couple of pleasant drives before he went lbw to Southee on 18, leaving England 38 and two and in a precarious position.

However Root settled in nicely, albeit being clunked on his helmet ducking under a Southee bouncer and played some handsome drives.

Stoneman played a couple of crisp cuts to the fence but still didn't have much conviction about his batting.

By lunch he ha battled 86 balls for his 28.

Legspinner Ish Sodhi was brought on for the 26th over, his first bit of test bowling since late 2016. He cleared his throat in his first over for an lbw appeal against Stoneman.

Boult had taken one for 20, Southee one for 18 in another quality display of searching fast-medium bowling.
