KEY POINTS:
The National Football League (NFL) is facing an overwhelming demand for tickets from British fans for its first regular season game outside North America at London's Wembley Stadium, officials said today.
In the three days following the NFL's announcement of the New York Giants-Miami Dolphins' game on October 28 at Wembley, 160,000 fans requested over half a million tickets, league officials said.
With Wembley's seating capacity expected to be about 90,000, the NFL is now looking at how they can cope with the unexpectedly high demand for tickets.
"Nearly all these requests have come from UK-based fans ... we anticipate a very quick sell-out when tickets go on sale in early March," said Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK.
NFL officials said they expected about 10,000 fans from the United States to make the trip to London for the game.
The NFL's first regular season game outside the US was in 2005 when 103,467 people watched the Arizona Cardinals play the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City.
