The Basics
1. Kordia's business spans five key areas: Networks, Cyber Security, Maritime, Media and Solutions (telco design & construction). Our head office is located in Auckland but we are a true trans-Tasman business with around 700 employees and 20 offices throughout Australia and New Zealand.
2. Kordia prides itself in being the only New Zealand Telco that's dedicated solely to business – this means our focus is on one thing: providing the best solutions, service and support to our customers. Our Net Promoter Score reflects this with our average score for the year to date sitting at +50.
3. Some customers are surprised to find out that we don't just cater to larger businesses, Kordia provides services to businesses of all sizes – from those with just 10 staff, through to businesses with 20,000+ staff – and provide a wide range of services, from SDWAN, Voice, Cloud PBX, IoT, live-streaming services, cyber security and more.
Our towers
4. Kordia has more than 200 sites including 50 large lattice towers up to 121m high, throughout New Zealand – and over 300kms of roads to these towers under our management. These towers transmit radio and television services throughout the country. Obelisk on the Old Man Range in Central Otago is one of the highest transmission sites in Australasia and the Pacific (photo attached) at 1690m asl, Kordia's Egmont site is the second highest at 1468 asl.
5. Kordia estimates its NZ riggers have climbed approx. 60,000m (60 km) since the start of the year – the equivalent of almost 7 ascents/descents of Mt. Everest.
6. Getting up the towers can be challenging, luckily, our field technicians are pretty good at flying drones – we use them to inspect towers and make sure they're well maintained.
7. With the remote nature of many of the sites, we operate 62 backup power generators throughout the network to ensure things stay up-and-running in the event of a power outage.
Connectivity is in our DNA
8. Kordia operate a network spanning the length and breadth of the country from Kaitaia to Invercargill and the Chatham Islands - monitored 24/7 365 days per year from our National Operations Centre (NOC).
9. In Australia, Kordia are considered to be experts in small cells delivery, having been involved in thousands. The team is currently rolling out more than 100 Greenfields small cell sites in metro and rural locations to help bring local Telcos' high-speed mobile strategies to life.
10. Kordia built and operates one of the longest digital microwave links (DMR) in the world and the longest in New Zealand at 135Km.
Kordia a "cornerstone" in the rollout of IoT in NZ
11. Kordia are big champions of the Internet of Things – the company's vision is to be the Australasian enabler of IoT solutions and we work collaboratively with a wide range of local and international players in the IoT space. Kordia recently completed the rollout of Thinxtra's Sigfox IoT network, which covers 94% of the New Zealand population. Kordia has also been contracted to build and operate Spark's LoRA IoT network.
Safety of Life / Maritime
12. We operate, and manage, the network that provides vital communications services to almost a quarter of the world's Oceans – a role our team is incredibly proud to play. Last year our specialist team responded to more than 300 distress calls from boaties and mariners in need. We have two Maritime Operations Centres (MoC) – one in Avalon (NZ) and one in Canberra (AU).
13. There have been instances where the MoC has taken distress calls well outside the New Zealand and Australian search and rescue areas, often on the other side of the globe. These calls are then handed to the local authority for that particular region who will then co-ordinate the S&R.
Cyber Security
14. In 2015, Kordia acquired leading Wellington-based cyber security consultancy, Aura Information Security. Since then, the business has grown in size and Aura now has offices in
Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne.
15. Aura's experts work collaboratively with a range of organisations and government departments, including CERT NZ and the Internet Task Force, to help keep NZ businesses safe online.
16. Aura started off as a 'pen test' shop in a garage more than 10 years ago. Since then, Aura's services have grown to include VSO, training, Red Teaming, incident response planning and more. In 2017, Aura won the iSANZ Security Company of the Year Award – a testament to the great work the team does in helping to protect NZ businesses against cyber-attacks.
17. To help address the global skills shortage, Aura is partnering with a range of local tertiary providers, including Waikato University, Unitec and Victoria University to offer scholarships, work experience and career guidance.
18. Kordia opened its Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Auckland in 2017. The SOC monitors our customers' network for security breaches, alerts or threats on a 24/7, 365 days per year basis.
Media
19. Kordia started out as a broadcast company more than 60 years ago (although we can trace our heritage right back to the early 1920s when the AM first broadcast was made). Since then, the business has evolved to provide a wide range of business and mission-critical solutions…but the company's rich heritage in Media remains today. In keeping with the changing technology landscape, our Media division offers a wide range of services beyond traditional broadcast and radio – from transmission, linking, data & connectivity to web-streaming of live events and more.
20. Just recently, Kordia announced it was investing in range of new technology, including Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) and next-generation Cloud for Digital Playout – something the company hopes will have a positive impact on the New Zealand media eco-system by making it easier for local content creators to share and distribute content.
21. Our Media team has been responsible, and still is, for getting live footage of almost every major sporting event in New Zealand to TV screens throughout in NZ; and the world. Kordia is also called upon to do the same for major events in the wider Pacific region.
