Winter is coming. It's getting colder. The urge to hibernate on the sofa until Spring with Netflix and a king size bar of Whitakers Peanut Butter chocolate (No contest – the best flavor) is growing stronger.
Here are some tips that I find useful to keep the motivation up to keep moving.
1. Exercise with a friend. It's an oldie but a goodie. It's really easy to roll over in bed on those frosty mornings and hit snooze on the alarm, but if you know you have a friend ready to meet you in the park for a walk/run before work, or a swim, or a class, it's harder to opt out. Just make sure the friend you choose isn't an enabler, and will actually hold you to account! If you both just text each other that bed is a better option, it's never going to work!
2. Stay Inside. It's easy to cancel all plans to exercise when the heavens open, so find some indoor exercises that you will feel motivated to wake up for or finish your day with, regardless of the weather. Heading to your local gym and seeing all those other like-minded winter gym bunnies will make you feel all the better for adjusting your routine and maintaining your fitness goals.
3. Mix it up. I get so bored when I do the same thing, week in and week out. Book a session with a trainer to change things up or try some different fitness apps to mix up your moves at the gym.
4. Train for an event. It's great incentive if you have a clear goal in place with a time limit.
Maybe if you've never run before, you could start training for a 5 km run – there are many programmes and apps that can get you off the sofa and building up to 5kms. It can also double as family bonding time if you force your kids to enter too.
5. Just remember how great you feel when you're fit and strong.
