Nothing tarnishes a much-anticipated holiday like a stressful start to your journey. So here's what to do to "pack like a pro", so the trip to and from the plane can be smooth sailing.
1. Know your limits – Different airlines can have different carry-on luggage limits, and there can also be differences between international and domestic allowances. Check your carry-on weight and size limits with your airline to avoid excess baggage charges.
2. Travelling with toiletries – Decant liquids into no more than 100ml bottles for your carry-on luggage and keep them in a clear plastic bag, usually no bigger than 20cm x 20cm. Store it at the top of your carry-on so they're easy to take out when you're going through security checks. Larger amounts of liquid toiletries should be packed in your checked luggage.
3. Keep electronics close – When you're not using your electronic devices, or are away from your seat on the plane, keep them securely locked in your carry-on bag, particularly if you're a solo traveller. Travel insurance may not cover you for damaged or stolen items if they are left unattended.
4. Spring clean your hand luggage – Everyday items like nail kits and lighters, that could be sitting at the bottom of your everyday bag, may cause problems at security if they're in your carry-on luggage. Always check for prohibited items before you go to the airport, and pack accordingly.
5. The family jewels – If you can't bear to lose it, leave it at home. High value items like jewellery often need to be specified when you buy travel insurance. If you must take it with you, wear it or keep it locked securely in your carry-on luggage.
6. Medication precautions – Medication may be confiscated if it's not in the original packaging. Carry a doctor's script as proof that you need the medication – that may also make it easier to replace anything that is lost. If possible, take enough medication to last the entire trip, as some drugs that you would normally buy at home may be unavailable overseas.
7. Stay entertained – Before you set off for the airport, download a good selection of podcasts, music, books, films and TV shows to keep you entertained during the flight. This also comes in handy if you're delayed at the airport at any point during your journey.
8. Power up – A device that won't power up can be seen as a potential security threat and may not be allowed on the aircraft. Make sure your devices are fully charged before the journey. Some flights may allow you to charge your devices on board – just make sure you don't leave any chargers behind when disembarking the flight.
Final checks
Make sure you have all your important documents, such as passports, customs declaration forms and your itinerary to hand before you touch down. Check the pockets in front of you and under the seats to make sure you haven't left anything behind, especially if you're travelling with children.
