You don't need to be a fitness guru to enjoy superb South Island walking. Head to Canterbury to discover these leisurely walks in spectacular locations, from the marine playground of Kaikoura in the north to the mighty Aoraki Mt Cook in the south.
1. The Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway
Time: Three hours return
This stunning walkway has a car park at either end. If the tide is low you can walk along the shoreline instead of the clifftop. There is an easy climb from each car-park and the rest is flat with stunning 360 degree views. Keep your eyes peeled for this coast's famed marine wildlife - whales and dolphins out to sea, and seals dotting the shoreline.
Where to stay: The luxurious and unique Hapuku Treehouses for a real treat, or the White Morph for excellent central accommodation.
2. Hooker Valley Track
Time: Four hours return
A gem in the Mackenzie basin on the highway between Christchurch and Central Otago, the Hooker Valley is the pinnacle of inspiring and dramatic alpine scenery. Every minute of this relatively flat walk has stunning vistas of Aoraki Mt Cook and surrounding mountains. The culmination is the Hooker Glacial Lake where views extend across the Hooker Glacier to Aoraki Mt Cook.
Where to stay: At The Hermitage Hotel where every room has a view of the mighty Aoraki, or Mt Cook Lodge for a cheaper option, still with stunning views.
3. Mt Somers Tracks
Time: From 30 minutes to a full day
If you are short of time take a 30 minute stroll around the lower wooded areas for a taste of the backcountry. For a longer day step it up and head to Woolshed Creek and Pinnacles Huts. Both are a relatively easy day walks, though there are a couple of heart-pumping hills along the way. Make sure you check out the Stavely Store in the small village of Stavely just before Mt Somers, and pick up a picnic for the walk ahead.
Where to stay: The township of Methven is rural New Zealand at its best with a small town charm. Ski Time lodge has a range of cosy and stylish accommodation options.
4. Castle Hill
Time: From 30 minutes
Castle Hill is a great spot for some mountain adventure with an urban base. Just over an hour's drive from Christchurch, this historic area is rich in Maori heritage. Pack a picnic and spend some time exploring the impressive limestone formations. The giant rocks take on many shapes from tabletops to pillars. You can wander around the rocks, and crawl through mini tunnels and arches chiselled by glaciers millions of years ago.
Where to stay: Take some time to explore Christchurch's ever-changing city, now well into the rebuilding phase. BreakFree on Cashel has a funky, urban style with a range to suit different budgets, or Hotel Montreal's luxurious suites put you near Victoria Street's foodie haven.
