Your kids flying the coop can evoke mixed emotions. It's an exciting but nervous time as they take off to begin the next stage of their lives and to learn how to live independently.
We asked parents for stories of their kids trying to make it on their own, and received some interesting responses. Here are 10 of our favourites...
1."Son called out in the shower that his eyes are stinging - get there to find he used the Jif bath cleaner as shampoo."
2."How about cleaning the oven with Christmas snow? (Didn't work very well)"
3."Laptop screen broken when son wanted to be superman and dived off the sofa with the intent of flying across room. He dived...there was no flying."
4."16yr old son got a brand new iPhone and an hour later put his jeans in the washing machine with the hour-old iPhone in the pocket. A week later the insurance company sent a replacement, then 13 month old baby brother picked it up while big brother was on the loo...and turfed it in the just filled bath."
5."Used the oven as storage space for various things including shoes. Until one of his flatmates tried making a pizza and preheated the oven to 200 degrees."
6."Six people, one small flat - they all did washing and no one checked the weather forecast. My son called me declaring he had no clean clothes, no sheets for his bed or any towels...and could he borrow my clothes dryer?"
7."Son backed into a Mercedes which was owned by a lawyer. Thank goodness for third party insurance but guess who paid initial car insurance excess? Yes indeedy."
8."Samsung phone dropped in creek whilst attempting a long jump"
9."My daughter managed to flush her phone down the toilet - on a good note it was a small older model and no blockage occurred."
10. "We took turns cooking...on his day I walked into the kitchen and he was attempting to mash raw potatoes. After informing him that you are meant to cook them first he told me he would make the best mash potatoes I had tasted. Turns out he stopped by KFC and picked up some potato and gravy."
Between sorting out accommodation, university applications, flat accounts and everything else, insurance is something that often gets overlooked. Many parents think that their insurance policies cover their kids when they move out of home, which is not always the case.
