Once a holiday destination for bach lovers, Weymouth now has quality new homes on offer in three different areas of its peninsular location.
Waimahia Landing, overlooking Waimahia Creek, has mid-priced homes in the $220,000 to $250,000 range as well as building sites.
Likewise, Heron Pt at the Weymouth end of Mahia Rd, has similarly priced property and land for development, while Settler's Cove, which was once farmland, is now fully developed.
The peninsula end of Weymouth, which is the longest established, is generally referred to as Weymouth Village.
It's an indication of the strong community of 600 to 700 households (1000 in the wider area) which is proud of its collective efforts to keep the popular shoreline walkways and reserves litter-free and the commercial area free of graffiti.
There are still many original farmhouse villas and baches which could be renovated plus views towards the airport, city and Karaka to the south. Many of the baches have long since been expanded and refurbished beyond recognition rather than being replaced with the townhouse-style developments seen in other suburbs.
Weymouth had its share of group housing developments in the 70s and 80s which are now popular with rental investors keen for a good return on a capital outlay of $120,000 to $150,000.
On the water's edge, a substantial 70s-style double-storey family home on a big site can be bought for the high $200,000s - virtually unheard of elsewhere in the city.
