The diverse countryside and spectacular beaches surrounding Warkworth make the area an ideal retreat for young and old.
Founded by John Anderson Brown, from Warkworth in Northumberland, England, the town will celebrate its 150-year anniversary in 2004. It was originally accessed by sea, with wharf facilities at Mahurangi River, and this natural element is still important to the livelihood and recreational needs of the community.
In 1970, the Omaha Ocean Beach area was developed and this marked the start of the changing dynamics of a region previously known for kauri mills and dairy farms. The interesting coastline, nearby islands and beaches meant the district soon became a popular tourist destination.
However, with the recent rapid growth of the area and its close proximity to Auckland with the improved motorway system, many of the holiday baches have been replaced with permanent homes.
What is there to do?
The area is becoming well known for its boutique wineries, which take advantage of the ideal soil and climate. With these wineries have come fantastic restaurants and cafes in which to relax and take in the glorious countryside. Maps of wine trials in the area are available.
Sandspit, 10 minutes east of Warkworth, is where you access many of the Gulf islands, including Kawau Island with its historic Mansion House, the former home of Sir George Grey. Goat Island marine reserve is 20 minutes drive from Warkworth and is very popular with divers and holiday-makers from throughout New Zealand and overseas.
Heading back towards Auckland you'll find Puhoi Village, with its famous cheese factory, and further down the road is Wenderholm Regional Park.
Other amenities in the area include a golf course, bowling clubs, a bustling RSA and many other sports and recreational clubs.
Held annually, the Kowhai Festival also attracts hundreds of visitors to the district.
Who lives in the area?
The area now attracts people working in Orewa, Albany and Auckland, with commuting being made easier with the motorway extension. This proximity to Auckland has also seen the establishment of bed-and-breakfast establishments and homestay accommodation.
Traditionally, the area, especially Snells Beach, has been home to many retired people, who enjoy its relaxed lifestyle and mild climate, but recently young families have made it their home, attracted by the good schools and recreational facilities. Also, with a population of about 13,000 there has been an increased need for services, which has attracted more professionals to the area.
What types of homes are there?
The geography of the area allows for diverse residences, including units and smaller homes in town, family homes near the beaches and a variety of lifestyle and smaller farms along the coastline.
The Warkworth township has a number of older homes, which are popular with younger people wanting to renovate, as well as new developments with high-quality houses.
There are also rural lifestyle blocks which vary in size from about one to 20 hectares.
Prices range from $200,000 to $2 million, depending on the type of home, location and quality.
