A steep-pitched roof, corner quoins and Italian copper shingles over the bay windows give street appeal to Falcon Homes' winning entry in the $230,000-$320,000 category.
Built among two-storey houses in Pakuranga, near the Tamaki River, the single-storey dwelling makes the most of a sloping section with varying stud heights and an open-plan flowing design.
Builder Vince Sussmilch introduced the owners to McCutchan Architectural Designers and worked with them on plans for four bedrooms and a study and a three-car garage. There is a floor area of 286.23 sq m, with a fully-landscaped garden and a sun-drenched cobblestone courtyard.
Owner Ross Corlett was impressed by the builder's attention to detail in producing a quality finish. One of the strong features was the variety of stud heights, rising to a full 3m in the lounge.
The house, which has a marbled entry foyer, also won the James Hardie Cladding Award. It took about four months to build.
Mr Sussmilch has been building quality homes in the area for 12 to 13 years with his wife as partner in the interior design.
He employs quality tradesmen for all aspects of the work and describes himself as a "coordinator," getting involved where necessary.
"I find it best to employ the experts and over the years I have identified a team who meet my quality standards and we work well together," he says. "In this house the special feature was the big trusses and the steeply-pitched roof has made for a very distinctive residence."
