Historic Russell, in the heart of the Bay of Islands, is an international tourist destination and popular recreational area for locals and Aucklanders.
Its key attractions include unspoilt beaches and islands, sailing, deep sea fishing, golf, large reserves and areas of native bush.
Controlled development has helped to preserve the natural beauty of the coastline.
The town's famous waterfront, The Strand, features several historic buildings, including Pompallier House and The Duke of Marlborough Hotel, as well as cute cafes and restaurants.
Community events during the year bring many visitors into the town. These include the Coastal Classic Yacht Race in October, the Tall Ships Race in the New Year, the Oyster Festival and music festivals.
The properties are a mix of old and new homes, and many are owned by people from overseas who use them as holiday homes. Long Beach and Tapeka are popular beachfront areas for holiday homes.
House prices fall into two categories. The prime waterfront properties range from $750,000 to $1.5 million while, at the lower end of the market, prices range from $150,000 to $250,000. These houses don't tend to have sea views.
