Coastal living doesn't come much better than this, as CEDRIC GRAY discovers.
Holidaymakers keen to invest in coastal properties have had their appetites whetted by Kingfisher Way, a small residential subdivision at Matakawau Beach.
Deep into the Awhitu peninsula, which is 90 km south of Auckland, Kingfisher Way has 10 sections varying in size from 1587 sq m to just over 2000 sq m.
They perch above Manukau Harbour and all enjoy harbour views. Six of the sections have been sold. Lyn Peacock of Barfoot & Thompson, Waiuku, says the subdivision is attracting interest because an increasing number of people, mainly from Auckland and the Waikato, are realising what the region has to offer.
"Apart from the excellent harbour fishing, there are other priceless assets like beautiful coastal walks, the Awhitu Regional Park, golf courses and a quiet rural environment," she says.
Her most recent clients, she adds, are a Waikato couple who had canvassed widely for a coastal section on which to build their retirement home.
"Price finally clinched the deal," she says. "The Kingfisher Way sections are priced at $75,000 to $90,000 with power and telephone services to the front gate."
The sections have elevated views to the south-east.
There is no beach access, but there is an all-tide boat ramp nearby and several safe sandy beaches.
The harbour is renowned for its flounder netting, scallop beds and line fishing.
The harbour laps a number of popular beaches, including Clarks, Kauritutahi, Grahams, Hudsons and Orua. There are clusters of holiday cottages at each resort, though many have given way to quality homes occupied by city commuters and retired couples.
Kingfisher Way has a building covenant to ensure quality building standards.
