CEDRIC GRAY checks out a landmark rural property in the heart of wine country.

The little white house on the hill, as it is known, enjoys commanding views across the valley.

The house is a landmark in Matua Valley, a few kilometres from Waimauku, north-west of Auckland. The beautiful area was little
known outside the region until Matua Valley Wines opened its now internationally-acclaimed winery in 1977.

The company has about 50ha under grapes on the western slopes, close to the Hunting Lodge restaurant. The little white house in Old North Rd is on higher ground where the views extend across the valley towards the south-eastern slopes.

The property, of about 4ha, is owned by Steve and Keri Smith who graze Hereford cattle on six paddocks of well-fenced pasture. The contour is gently sloping, making it ideal for light horse grazing, too. Mature trees add to the beauty of the environment and provide excellent stock shelter.

The neat four-bedroom home was built 15 years ago, the owners taking care to preserve the uninterrupted views from almost every room. Native and exotic trees add to the relaxed atmosphere, yet in no way have they been allowed to dominate the wide expanse of lawns and gardens.

A long sealed driveway from Old North Rd ensures peace and privacy, and the house has been designed specifically for comfortable family living. The newly-renovated kitchen features granite benchtops, modern gas and electrical appliances and an abundance of cupboard space. Sliding windows provide ample natural light and double as a servery for outdoor dining. There is a cosy family dining room, separate family lounge and formal lounge.

The living areas open to a large outdoor deck, swimming pool and spa pool. It is an ideal setting for outdoor entertaining.

A central staircase leads to the upstairs bedrooms, which are served by a central bathroom with twin vanities and a separate toilet.

There are two garages, a carport and a substantial workshop. A large water tank provides ample water for stock and household use, and the property is protected by security gates.
