CEDRIC GRAY checks out a property designed with golf-lovers in mind.
Golf has loomed large in the lives of a North Korean family, who for the past 12 months have used their West Auckland property as a homestay-tuition centre for promising young Korean golfers.
The 4ha property is in Henwood Rd, Taupaki - a quiet country lane a few minutes' drive from the north western motorway.
It is also within easy reach of the Huapai Golf Club, where North Korean membership is very strong, and a nearby driving range opened by Koreans a few months ago.
The property is enclosed on three sides by mature shelter belts, and the park-like grounds have been grazed by young goats, or groomed by the ride-on mower. In golfing parlance, it is ideal par 3 pitch and putt country.
The land is flat and well-drained. About 2ha has been extensively planted in native and exotic trees, yet there is plenty of space for further expansion of leisure facilities - such as a swimming pool and tennis court.
The visiting golfers have lived in rural luxury. The stunning brick and tile home, built four years ago, has five bedrooms, all with en suites and walk-in wardrobes.
The tastefully furnished living area, comprising two lounges, allows for indoor entertaining on a grand scale. With french-door access to a wide, paved patio, it can entertain more than 100 guests in comfort.
The full granite kitchen and nearby dining suite, bathroom, separate toilet and laundry share the striking tiled floor and gas-fired heating in the main living area. There is also a large office-computer room and an attached four-car garage with loft storage reached by a drop-down staircase.
The two 2000lt tanks provide ample water, and there is a full security system.
The house, of about 400sq m, in the centre of the property is reached by a long driveway flanked by a row of pretty standard roses.
Two beautifully carved Shar fei dogs guard the driveway entrance, reflecting the Korean family's interest in dog-breeding.
The property goes to auction on February 23. For details contact Ron Fowler, Norwest Real Estate, Kumeu, on 412 8876.
