Newbery Lodge was built in the 1930s and is set among established landscaped gardens
After 30 years of current ownership, Newbery Lodge, an historic popular wedding and function venue in the Christchurch suburb of Opawa is being offered for sale with a lease in place to a local catering company.
"This beautiful character homestead was significantly refurbished in 2011," says Courtney Doig of Colliers
International who, with colleague Paul Vining, is marketing 15 Newbery St for sale by deadline private treaty closing March 3.
The homestead was built in the 1930s and is set on 4249 sq m of established landscaped grounds. It replaced an original house built on the current site in the early 1850s by a Dr John Shering Willis from the UK and his wife, Agnes Louise. Along with 10 acres of land, the house was subsequently gifted to one of their three daughters, who married Alfred Newbery.
Sold in the mid 1920s, the house either burnt down or fell into serious disrepair and was then purchased by the Stevens family who replaced the old house with the homestead that is on site now. At that time it was called Clumber, but in the 1970s it was renamed Newbery Lodge by one of the subsequent owners.
Vining says Newbery Lodge is being sold with the lease and current functions activity in place to locally owned caterers Continental paying $56,500 per annum net in rent.
