This leafy suburb has spectacular sea views and houses that are affordable. CHARLOTTE COSSAR reports.
With spectacular sea views from most homes in the area, Hillsborough is a private, leafy suburb only 20 minutes from central Auckland.
Hillsborough is on a ridge and the area has sweeping views of Manukau Harbour to Manukau Heads, with some parts overlooking Puketutu Island. In parts of Hillsborough there are Titirangi-like bush views and the bird life is incredible.
The area attracts a range of residents, from young singles to the elderly. Also, many families settle in the area to take advantage of the good primary and secondary schools - the area is in zone for Mt Roskill Grammar.
Once you tire of the sea views, Hillsborough has many amenities, including Cameron Swimming Pool, golf courses, large sports fields and, in nearby Three Kings, a shopping centre and library. There is also a large shopping complex which was recently built in Lynfield.
Set high on the hill with good views, the area commands prices to match, but not too high to be unrealistic. The medium house price is $260,000. However, executive-style homes fetch more than $400,000, with some homes achieving the $1 million mark. At present most average between $350,000 and $600,000.
The most sought-after locations in Hillsborough are those on the seaward side of Hillsborough Rd with harbour views. Roads to look out for include Aldersgate, Saran, Hames, Frederick, Goodall, Carlton and Cape Horn.
Hillsborough homes are a bit different and are realistically priced, which makes it a good area for people relocating to Auckland from other New Zealand towns and cities, as well as immigrants. However, to buy in this area, you have to be on your toes as most agents have good buyer inquiry lists and properties do not last long on the market.
So if you are looking for an area that is affordable, close to the city and the airport and one with spectacular views, Hillsborough could be your ideal destination.
