Looking over the Viaduct and harbour and across to Northcote and Devonport, Debra Greig and husband Donald reckon this is the best view in Auckland.
That feast for the eyes comes courtesy of their penthouse-level apartment in the Sebel building in Customs St West.
The couple bought the one-bedroom apartment about eight years ago as their city base. They had rented before in the Lighter Basin but appreciated this address being even closer to one of their favourite restaurants, Soul (or alternately Monsoon Poon) ... only a minute by foot, as well as being close to the CBD, including a seven-minute walk to Smith & Caughey's, says Debra. At first the apartment was kitted out in Sebel Suites fashion but the couple have renovated twice, the most recent, revamping it into a designer living space.
The main structural change was the kitchen but the couple also upgraded the lighting and painted.
"It is highly specced," says Donald, "The way we live, we love lovely things and this apartment has been furnished to that standard."
From the entrance area, you have a mirrored wall behind the dining table, the bathroom is on the left for guests to use, as well as being the couple's en suite (with bath and separate shower and F&P washer and dryer in a cupboard) accessed off their bedroom. Flooring is carpet in the living and bedroom, tiles in the kitchen and bathroom.
The gourmet kitchen on the left of the living space has pull-out storage to maximise space. Appliances include a Bosch dishwasher, coffee machine and microwave, Mitsubishi fridge/freezer, DeLonghi oven and a built-in wine fridge.

The living space opens through a sliding hush-glass door to the balcony overlooking the Viaduct. There is a door to this balcony from the bedroom, as well as another balcony just for the bedroom. Mirrored doors lead from the living area to the bedroom, maximising the feeling of space and light already provided by the sloping ceiling's high stud.
The apartment is warm throughout the year, with the couple using heating only for the coldest weeks in the year.
"It's also a good-sized space for a one-bedroom apartment," says Debra. "It gets great light as it's northeast facing and it's a great location. We also have a secure carpark underneath."
The couple have enjoyed being so central but find now that they have a property in Matakana they are using the apartment less often.
A new owner would have the option of living here or putting it into the hotel room pool. (The apartments are owned by private owners and either leased to the hotel or used by owner-occupiers.)
The couple says furniture and artwork can be included in the sale, by negotiation.
They reckon the apartment's value is not a lot of money in today's market, and being leasehold makes it more affordable. "Everything in the Viaduct is leasehold, otherwise they would be three times the price," says Donald.
