This genteel and highly prestigious pocket of Auckland boasts a variety of properties, top-notch schools and close proximity to the city.
With first-rate transportation routes via either the motorway or major arterial roads, travelling to and from Epsom is a breeze - although Manukau Rd and Gillies Ave can get clogged at times, but at least the scenery is pretty!
Epsom is justifiably regarded as one of Auckland's more prestigious suburbs, renowned for celebrated historic homes, famous residences and residents and being within a stone's throw of many of the city's top educational establishments. It is truly a suburb that has acquired a worthy elder statesmanship in the city.
Bordered by two of Auckland's prime and more preferred parks - Auckland Domain and One Tree Hill/Cornwall Park - the neighbourhood has many large villas and bungalows on generous lots, offering families the ideal atmosphere in which to reside. The area was predominantly settled around the turn of last century and although many of the homes are from this era, plentiful locales of modern townhouses benefit from the appealing tree-lined roads and bountiful greenery.
The composition of residents has altered markedly in recent years with a strong Asian community making the area their home. Many of the suburb's decades-old family names, finding the upkeep of their grounds costly and time consuming, have moved on. Rightly or wrongly, many of their homesteads have been flattened and substituted with modern townhouses. There are also many families in the area, especially those with secondary school-age children. The close proximity to many private and public schools makes Epsom the ideal choice for parents not wanting to travel too far for the school round. Occasionally, some children will even walk to school - a phenomenon unheard of in recent years.
Purchasing in Epsom often necessitates speed and - more than likely - a bit of cash. But, if schools and location are top of your list of priorities, this is a good area to be in.
An established area, its residents want for nothing. Newmarket, the city and the new and improved St Lukes shopping centre are nearby, as are the lovely villages of Mt Eden and Remuera.
Eateries abound nearby, so going down the road for a slap-up meal is often the order of the evening. However, if you prefer to stay indoors, the neighbourhood is well-known for fine fish and chip shops and the like.
As mentioned, the schooling is definitely top quality. The area is close to a number of primary, intermediate and secondary schools, including Epsom Normal, Maungawhau School, Epsom Primary, Kohia Terrace School, Auckland Normal Intermediate, Auckland Grammar, Epsom Girls Grammar, Diocesan School for Girls, St Cuthberts College and St Peters College.
