Including St Heliers, Mission Bay, Kohimarama, Glendowie and Orakei.
This group of suburbs reflects all that is aspirational about Auckland: history, a sense of grandeur, a demographic range and a social structure which embraces old and new money.
Many residents are second or third generation owners, while newly wealthy Aucklanders and migrants aspire to live in the area as well.
Locals enjoy being able to walk to the waterfront to enjoy its superlative views of Rangitoto Island.
Mission Bay and St Heliers are locations to be seen in, and many choose to purchase in these suburbs for that reason alone.
Typical dwellings The eastern bays are not the place to look for character houses but they have every other type of dwelling from the opulent mansions along Orakei's Paritai Drive to state housing. A number of ex-state homes have been privatised and revitalised, commanding premium prices for their location.
Amenities Local schooling is high-quality, with sought-after primary and intermediate schools. Co-educational Selwyn College and Glendowie College and Catholic boys school Sacred Heart are the local secondary schools.
Shopping facilities are spread throughout the bays, with a village atmosphere at St Heliers and eateries at Mission Bay. There's limited grocery shopping although there is Eastridge shopping centre at the back of Kohimarama, and Meadowbank Foodtown is reasonably close.
All the bays are tidal but suitable for swimming. The reserve bordering Mission Bay is well frequented by picnickers, walkers and sunbathers. The Glendowie sandspit and Tahuna Torea bird sanctuary have fabulous walks. And then there's Tamaki Drive for walking, running, cycling, stroller-pushing or rollerblading.
The Tamaki Yacht Club and Kohi Yacht Club are well patronised.
Real estate
Trends Properties in this area will always be in demand and command good prices.
Entry-point properties, like classic brick and tile units, are being snapped up by professional couples who enjoy waterfront living but can't afford a standalone house.
Glendowie, a once less-desirable area, is now considered a good option because of its relatively low prices and larger sections.
Rental and investment The popularity of the area means the rental market is strong. People seeking the lifestyle often decide to rent long-term rather than buy.
Best streets Paritai Drive in Orakei, Cliff Rd and Springcombe Rd in St Heliers and The Rise and Riddell Rd in Glendowie.
