Roy Zhu is proudly following in his father's footsteps. Roy, who is from Shanghai in China, was 17 when his family moved to New Zealand.
At 34, with a management degree, one daughter and another on the way, he has built this Homestar six-rated house.
"I'm influenced by my dad because he was the senior contract supervisor of Shanghai Research Building Institute of Building Sites, so when I was a kid he always took me to his construction sites at different stages, from the beginning to the end.
"He was very passionate about what he was doing and it was impressive for me to see the total progress of how the building has been done."
The Homestar rating is an independent tool that measures such things as the health of the home.
In this one, it means the windows are not only double-glazed but have thermally broken joinery, which means the cold is really separated from the home, he says.
There is also a heat pump, but with high-density insulation material the home is already warm, and there is a tank that recycles rainwater that can then be used to flush the toilet.
The rating means all the elements in the home are above average quality, and the modern home also features a security camera with a touch screen and an intercom.
The front door leads into a small lounge or waiting area then opens into the kitchen, dining and lounge areas.
The kitchen features tons of cupboards, including a double pantry, and the lounge opens to the fully fenced backyard with citrus trees, a kauri tree and a kowhai tree.
The ground floor bedroom opens to the back yard and the master bedroom upstairs has an en suite, plus a wardrobe for the man and a walk-in wardrobe for the woman, says Roy.
Another bedroom upstairs features panoramic views out to the sea and the city.
The motorways are handy and on the doorstep is the Westgate shopping mall, which is an easy walk.
Roy is happy with this house, and his next project is a terraced house in Ponsonby.
