Dalu Mncube was remembered as "a very dear and loved" keeper by staff, close friends and family at Whangarei's Zion Wildlife Gardens when it temporarily reopened for a memorial service today.
Everyone who attended the service was asked to bring a single flower from their garden as a tribute to Mr Mncube.
The 26-year-old was mauled to death by a white tiger while cleaning its enclosure last week. The tiger was later shot dead.
In a farewell message posted on the Zion Wildlife Gardens website, Mr Mncube was remembered for his amazing way with people, and his ability to reach out and touch anyone regardless of their race, age, religion or nationality.
"We remember him for the bond he formed with the animals of Zion, for his caring nature and his unshakeably positive outlook on life," it read.
"His smile was contagious, his enthusiasm infectious, his passion and love for the animals of Zion boundless."
Mr Mncube arrived in New Zealand four years ago, and leaves behind his partner Sharon and one-year-old daughter Starskea.
Management at Zion have dubbed him the "heart and soul" of the park.
"Today, four years on from his arrival, Dalu leaves us no longer a stranger, but instead a much-loved friend, a respected colleague, and an 'uncle' to hundreds of people around the globe," they said.
"Many of the animals at Zion Wildlife Gardens were hand-raised by Dalu, and they too would be feeling the loss."
