The Prime Minister's office brands as absurd attempts to link the SIS Director's ruling over Ahmed Zaoui with his service as ambassador to France and Algeria.
The Algerian remains in jail, despite being granted refugee status.
Auckland University's Paul Buchanan is suspicious that SIS head Richard Wood was ambassador in Paris at the time Mr Zaoui was suspected of terrorism.
A spokesman for Helen Clark says Mr Wood never presented his credentials to Algeria and never went there.
He says Mr Buchanan should produce some evidence of a link.
