The weight of 50 crates of Christmas beer helped keep a van from rolling during a collision with a car on the outskirts of Masterton yesterday, the van driver says.
Driver Lance Cooper said he had been travelling in his Toyota van south on State Highway 2 to deliver the beer to the Seven Day Club in Carterton when a car with a young woman at the wheel had turned in front of him into Cornwall Rd about 5pm.
The boot and rear end of the later model Toyota was torn off and the female driver was shaken but uninjured. She was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Mr Cooper said the weight of his consignment of beer had probably helped prevent a worse outcome and he was relieved the woman was uninjured as well.
"The van got some damage but the weight of the beer probably kept it from rolling. And not a single bottle was smashed.
