A youth blew more than six times over the legal limit when he was stopped in a drink-driving blitz in Tauranga at the weekend.
The 17-year-old Tauranga boy told officers he had never tried driving drunk before and that his sober friend did not know how to drive his van, Sergeant Dan Roser, of the Traffic Alcohol Group, said.
Mr Roser told the Bay of Plenty Times the youth, who held only a restricted licence, blew 910mcg of alcohol per litre of breath when he was stopped at 1.30am on Sunday.
The legal limit for people under 20 is 150mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.
There were 29 drunk drivers detected police in an operation that saw 3000 drivers tested.
