Backs: Leon Macdonald, Mills Muliaina, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Joe Rocokoko, Doug Howlett/Rico Gear, Daniel Carter, Nick Evans, Piri Weepu, Byron Kellehar, Jimmy Cowan, Aaron Mauger, Luke McAlister, Isaia Toeava.

Nonu was left out, simply because no risks should be taken. My squad also only includes 29 players with a 16forward to 13 back split. It is difficult to pick another centre other than Toeava as firstly no one else really stepped up, and it is also a position in which both Muliaina and McAlister could step into if the need arises.
Steve Walsh (not the ref!!)

As long as pathetic John Afoa doesn't make it. he was crushed on the weekend. And Aaron Maugers place should be questioned too. He was useless, has been for 2 years now. McAllister, Toeava and Tuitavake for midfield. Also drop both Anton and Hore, they cant throw! Promote Whitcombe and Flyn.
Jason

I think everyone's pretty much picked a straightforward team but I can help pick the All Blacks from a different angle. Okay, this is my own opinion but I've never felt comfortable with Leon MacDonald. People talk about the likes of Nonu, Lauaki or Flavell might mess up during a crucial moment at World Cup time but I've seen enough errors MacDonald had made which resulted to immediate tries in the past (eg: his charged down kicks and dropped catches - which led directly to tries scored by the opposition) and for someone who has played at the highest level for years, there's really no excuse. Mils Muliaina should be our fullback until he retires. And to free up other backline candidates, Doug Howlett or even Luke McAlister are capable at custodian. Imagine McAlister chiming in the backline or using the open space from No.15, he'd be awesome. Legends like Va'aiga Tuigamala, John Kirwan and Jonah Lomu put fear on the flank in terms of physical presence, brute strength, sheer power and speed to burn consistently getting over the advantage line. It's a shame we won't see any of these types for awhile and that's why I think Hosea Gear whom I rate a much improved player who probably outshines his brother, deserves a crack at the big time. Joe is thereabouts, but not quite powerful although he has the skill set and is definitely a gamebreaker. I don't see any reason to take Nick Evans either, we already have Mauger and McAlister to cover Carter. Then there's Weepu too. The forwards almost pick themselves but I couldn't shave one off in regards to what you would witness as the most punishing and devastating group of backrowers ever assembled. The other two I really hope that don't make the squad are Reuben Thorne and Anton Oliver - they're over the hill and we're better off with ANY other replacements Anyway, I'll sign off with my squad – Cheers:

If Nonu makes the squad he will be the weak link. He is not a team player, he plays for himself, cant read the game and hes not even that good. Leon McDonald isnt that good either. He only plays well with the Crusaders. He has far too many off games with the ABs . I believe he lost us the world cup by taking the kicking duties off Carter. He got all the easy kicks over (something like 15 in a row) but missed all the rest when he was under pressure
Geoff
A word of warning for you punters : you had better keep in mind a replacement for when Luke McAlister gets injured again.

My top New Zealand super 14 team would have to be the Chiefs. They started the season slow but eventually proved what they have got. Standouts in this years competition would have to be Isaia Toeava,Sitiveni Sivivatu,Luke McAlister, Liam Messam. Well the team to watch for at this years world cup would have to be South Africa. They have proved that they can do it.
Craig
Its a shame to see that one of your experts is picking Ali Williams to miss out and both of them have no room for Joe Rococoko. Better to dump Nucifora than these guys. Are we going to give up on Rococoko after he has only been given one chance to start this year? His ability to play on either wing should see him edge out either Howlett or Gear. I agree Thorne can't match the competition from the likes of Flavell, Lauaki, Messam, Kaino and Tuiali'i. Toss a coin between Whitcomb and Hore, Cowan and Leonard.

I consider that all the reconditioned ABs will be guaranteed places even if some have been starved of game time (Joe Rokocoko). That decision was made a long time ago and GH has clearly been working toward the long-term plan. So as much as you might favour some of the S14 up-and-comers, this is not, barring injuries, a time to test new blood. A replacement lock - a specialist, we have enough lock support in the 22 - is needed for injured Eaton. I've picked Robinson to just edge out Rawlinson. After that there's only room for two more forwards. Tialata is a must: who else can play both sides of the scrum?

I think they'll go for 14, 16 split leave the third halfback and hooker to battle it out for the Junior AB's and Maoris. Messam could push his way into the squad at the expense of Lauaki, Thorne or Flavell.

I have based my squad on form in the recent Super 14 (yawn!). In my backs, I have dropped Leon MacDonald in place of Nick Evans, simply cause of Evans tactical kicking, reading of a game, defence and his speed, all skills none of which MacDonald possesses. Brendon Leonard has also proven he can match it at international level so why not give him a crack aye? Backs: Mils Muliaina, Nick Evans, Sitiveni Sivivatu, Doug Howlett, Rico Gear, Isaia Toeava, Ma'a Nonu, Luke McAlister, Aaron Mauger, Daniel Carter, Joe Rokocoko, Byron Kelleher, Piri Weepu, Brendon Leonard. In my forwards, Liam Messam gets the nod ahead of Reuben Thorne, simply due to to his consistant performances and the fact he can cover 6, 7, 8 or even 13 if need be.
Forwards: Rodney So'oialo, Sione Lauaki, Richie McCaw, Chris Masoe, Jerry Collins, Liam Messam, Chris Jack, Ali Williams, Troy Flavell, Carl Hayman, Tony Woodcock, Neemia Tialata, Clark Dermody, Keven Mealamu, Andrew Hore, Anton Oliver.

Pick anybody from the reconditioning squad who is match fit! Guess that means we miss out on Rocko, McDonald, Sivivatu, Mauger, McAllister, Kelleher, Jacko, Sommerville (not to mention Collins, Eaton and Ryan). Haven't we done well, good work Mssrs Henry and Nicifora. I trust that club football will be good enough to get the big names up to international fitness and standard, lets face it is the only option we have apart from the internationals themselves. Maybe we could also risk the lads in the NPC..
