KEY POINTS:
Auckland was rocked by three earthquakes last night, the strongest measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale. The tremors, which are unusual for Auckland, were described as shallow quakes and were felt as far afield as Te Atatu and Kawau Island.
Did you feel it? Are you prepared for a quake? Do you know what to do?

Haha! Aucklanders are so easily amused, you should move down here We had a big one yesterday too at 12.45pm. We all just looked at each other, went "cool" and got back to work. You should feel a Wellington one from the top of a 12 storey building designed to sway in earthquakes. If you live here long enough you learn how to hear them coming, its like some sort of earthquake sense. The air goes kind of still and you can hear something coming for you.
Nicki
It was a bit of a scare. I live in Te Atatu south and felt my bed shake. I cant say I was prepared for it because I wasnt.
Dan
Oh yes indeed I felt it. An experience like no other.
It really proves how Auckland as we know it could change in seconds. I was in my room meditating and felt the shakes. At first I thought my flatmate had a visitor again but no. An earthquake. Wow.
Kathryn
I was sitting in the chair and my husband was on the couch right next to me and I felt it but he didnt. Thought I was making it up until my mother rang and said that she felt it also and my brother and niece. He then thought it was a family thing. Anyway, later found out that it was in fact an earthquake. Now worried so getting my self defence kit ready. Who would have thought Auckland having an earthquake. Next we will be having volcanic eruptions.

My son was working on the computer, not sure exactly what time, but Lost was on. He asked me if I had felt the shaking, we were sitting less than 2 metres apart and he felt it but I did not. I thought he was dreaming until I saw the News this morning. My daughter was also in the room and felt nothing, and apparently he was unaware of the later shakes. Bit odd really. We are in Helensville on the opposite coast!

We were both home alone at the time, usually the house is full with familiy members, but they happen to be away at the time, it was getting dark, Namo was inside the front house and I was at the back garage when suddently the small quake struck, it was small and short but very strong, which was felt throughout the country last night, it was very unusual to experience such a quake in the area, and it did scare us a bit. We were in our pjs at the time so we quickly got dressed just in case it happened again, it could even be a bigger one so we also rang family members to see if they were alright and had made a plan just in case in happened again. I think that we should always be prepared for such disasters and now is a good time, no matter where we are.
Trish Black
We certainly felt it in Nirvana Way Mt Roskill. Couldnt believe it was an earthquake, but my husband assured me it was. The phones were ringing red hot around the area, I think everyone thought they were imagining things. Scary to think this happened in Auckland, makes you think about preparing if there is ever a biggie!
Little Jimmy, Aged 6
Crikey. Broke three bones in my arm diving for cover under the coffee table. Hope we dont get the Wellington wind as well, else our deck chairs might blow over and that would be horrific.
Rob
I was sitting on St Heliers beach with friends enjoying a pizza & a bottle of wine but felt nothing. Earthquake? what earthquake!

Now thats typical! I have been reading a lot about NZ geology in the last 2 days, nearly obsessed in finding interesting in depth articles with a scientific background, and of all things what do I miss? The earthquake in my hometown, duuuuh! We were watching TV, Lost, like everyone, didnt feel a thing! Cant believe I missed it, usually whenever the ground makes the tiniest move, I think of quakes, but this time when there is actually a stronger one, I don't feel it. It's not fair, is it? Dear geologists, I hope you got all your equipment up to scratch and keep us up to date as good and often as you can!

This was a very bizarre feeling. I was sitting at my computer talking to friends on MSN, and I am normally quite still when I was sitting down. I cant remember what time it was exactly, but it was after 8pm, and I suddenly felt like I was moving sideways for about a period of 10 seconds or so. I thought my dad was moving something heavy, but I realised that nothing that heavy could've moved every thing in my room sideways! Not even the surround sound system was on (which gives a heck load of vibrations when Dads got it loud, playing games on the X360 in 5.1) so I went to Mum, told her about it (she was on the phone at the time) and she didnt feel it, probably because she was walking around. I told my friend on MSN and he thought I was going mad (obviously not, now that I have seen it here). It was a very strange feeling though, I didnt think it was that strong, but it was a bit like I was being pushed around backwards and forwards by someone.

Around 21:30 our patients in CCU all found their bed shaking, but the staff who were working did not feel anything. After reading online about the earth quake by Orewa we were satisfied that the patients were not mad!
Ali
I was in toilet at that time of earthquake. It felt like something fell on me.
Margaret
Definitely felt "the earth move" at the top of Westwater in Ponsonby at 9.01 tonight!..... Wasn't a terribly big shake but we did notice it - it made us stop and question "did you feel that!".
Kitty
We felt the earthquake in our home in Dannemora. It shook the house and made furniture sway a little as if someone was kicking or pushing it. But nothing fell down and no one was hurt.
Laredo
It snaked under the house and rattled the windows and plates on it's way thru Kingsland.
Rachel
Felt the earthquake tonight in Army Bay, Whangaparaoa. Thought to myself that feels like a bloody earthquake but nah can't be and just thought it must have been a really big truck driving past!
Ange
Yep Glenfield felt it. Outside on the deck with my feet up. Vibrations felt like invisible elephants running along the deck and around the house. Lasted a good few seconds. Wonder how many people will sleep soundly tonight. Knew exactly what it was as had experienced tremors in the south island but never here in Auckland. Makes you aware how totally powerless you really are. What a great thing the net is for quickly updated news. Course if the power went out... well I'd still be wondering.
Alana
Just checked the Geonet Data Centre Website, and their seems to have been another smaller quake. I live in Tauranga, I hope all the Aucklanders are ok, we are thinking of you!!!!!! P.S, if white Island blows up, I'm inviting myself to your houses!!!!
John Harris
Felt the first one around 9pm for sure - then after jumping in bed felt a second smaller one - aprrox 11:25 - that made me jump on the web to see if anyone else hadnews - go the Herald for being right on it - hope thats it for the night - don't think I'll sleep so well tonight.
Helen at Forrest Hill
11.25 pm. have just felt another small tremor at forrest hill. We also felt the 9pm one but not the one before that.
Arnika
Defnitely felt the earthquake in Laingholm, West Auckland. The house shook for about 5 seconds in an almost circular motion as I was sitting at my computer desk. No-one else in the house felt it except me though. The movement was just like the simulator at Te Papa, so the museum curators really got it right. I've now been through an earthquake and it wasn't disastrous so I'm really pleased. :o)
Chris & Louise
I have to say that rumble couldn't have come at a more intense time while watching Lost. Well we thought so. Everyone thought the big bass drop effect that plays on lost before the adverts shakes the house with the subwoofer.

My daughter Smitha called me over phone about an hr back at about 3pmM Indian Standard Time. She lives near Waterview. She was alone and sitting on the sofa, when suddenly the sofa and the woodeen stand in the corner began to shake. As she was alone she was scared. She wore her jacket and sat down, worried. Her husband Kumar, who was away to a friend's house, who also felt the tremor, came home and told his wife it was an earthquake. A bit scared after the first experience of a tremor, Smitha called us over phone to tell us what happened and not to worry, as no damage had occurred. We live in Mysore (India), a safe place where no tremors occur
Denise
Sitting at my computer in Torbay I felt the house shaking for about 6 secs; got a fright, but had no idea what it was and thought, "That can't be an earthquake in Auckland". What else would have caused it I ask you? You almost think you imagine these things till you hear the news!
Jack
I live in Hillcrest and while reading the last of the articles I hadn't finished from the Herald on Sunday about Stephen Flemming, my chair moved like a rocker for about 2-3seconds. Haven't felt one for years.
Not as strong as the one I experienced in Taurang back in 1963
Linda, Devonport
There were 10 of us at a school meeting- the whole room seemed to shimy sideways and the windows rattled. The school principal got a real fright and another teacher said quite calmly "It's just an Earthquake - I used to live in Wellington, its OK". We made plans to all huddle under the door way of the old part of a 100 year old building just in case and continued with our meeting then came home and had a strong cuppa tea. We've got flash lights and water at the ready though - you never know!
Debbie from Coromandel
I felt the earthquake here in Coromandel. I was on the computer and my monitor shook slightly. My partner says he felt one during the night last night too.

Geez you Aucklanders - get a life and get over it!!! Common event further down the island.
Bruce
It's so good to feel an earthquake again! I've lived in/near Auckland for 11 years now and never felt one here... we used to get some real rippers in Gisborne and in southern Hawkes Bay where you would diving under the dining room table. That would only happen when the windows were breaking or the dishes in the kitchen were flying everywhere. Ahhh the good old days. My immediate thought about tonight's quake was - has White Island blown and set off other areas. Qick check of the www.geonet.org.nz site revealed all.
Leah Govorko
I was watching 'Lost' on telly, the shaking I felt definately added to the drama.
Max
I've been in NZ for three years, and this was my first quake. Now I can buy a t-shirt.... 'I survived the auckland earthquake 2007' ;)

I live in Orewa. The couch shook a little. Called the neighbour and he had felt it too though no-one else in his house had. Then got a call from my sister in Wanganui who had seen it on TV! I'm guessing a few schools will be doing drills tomorrow.
Sian Rankin aged 13, Mt Roskill
At round about nine oclock my brother and I were just going to bed and i felt a sudden shaking.I thought my bed was collapsing at first, so I grabbed onto the wall for support it was also shaking. I realised i was experiencing a earthquake and a very violent one.I had to jump up, to stop my television from crashing to the floor. Several of my pictures fell off my wall. When the earth quake was over, my brother rushed into my room and said "did you feel that earthquake?" and then i replied "yea it was if a giant was kicking our house, are you ok?" After that, we where a bit shaken, so my brother made both of us a hot chocolate and it eased our nerves a bit but i will always remember that.
Jazz
My bedroom mirror fell off the wall making all the bits and bobs on my dressing table fall to the ground. Mirror is still in one piece (antiques are built to last) but its good to no i was not going crazy in Pt Chevalier!

I am a 13 year old girl who lives in Remuera in Auckland the experience of this earthquake was very scary. I just walked in the door and went towards the table when the shaking began. I just stood there holding on to the table where my grandma and youngest sister were sitting. They thought that that it was just me shaking the table as I grabbed on to it tightly. My mum who was in the kitchen didn't fell anything at all but herd a noise like the floor was shaking.
I saw the curtains and the television moving and was getting worried, shaking and was about to cry I thought it would never end although it only lasted about 2 or 3 seconds.
I hope that I never have this sort of experience again and if there is another earthquake to come I hope that there will be a warning!!!
Louise
Sitting watching the TV in Glenfield when I felt the couch shuddering for about 5 seconds. Then all the girls came into lounge quite freak out. Not something that I have ever experienced in Auckland. Makes you think about why White Island is heating up and what is going on underground.
Phil
Live less than a kilometre from Orewa, didn't feel a thing! First we knew was texts from concerned friends. A friend in Stanmore Bay was equally oblivious.
Bert
Not a big one, shook the couch and interrupted Lost! Also prompted phone calls from 3 of my girlfriends relatives, and plans on where we should meet if the "big one" comes. If I could roll my eyes in type that's what I would be doing now...
Chilayne
I was on the computer at the time when I felt the tremor around 9pm. My calender fell off the wall but I'm pretty sure it was loose anyway. I asked my parents if they felt anything and they wern't sure what I was on about. It wasn't till my friend texted me asking if I felt the quake, when I realised that I'm not going crazy! (In a matter of opinion) :) I'm in Greenhithe on the North Shore
Leigh
Whoa!!.. yep I'm from Wellington originally and should be immune to them, but just not expect them here in Downtown Auckland! Sure gave me a fright! In an eleven story apartment building and when it hit I realised that what I knew to do was useless; - can't stand in the "ranch slider" doorway can you! or "on balcony" be "fairly stupid" and the only internal door way from lounge is double glass doors. Just stood in middle of room like a startled deer!! Silly but what do you do?!- Dont want to be in this apartment if the "Big One" ever hits!
Ailsa
We're at Whangaparaoa, and Yep we felt it. I actually thought it was my husband!!! Our house is Lockwood style and on piles, and there is a certain amount of movement when someone walks through the house, so when the first shake happened, I actually thought it was him! Then the second one happened and I thought 'Holy Hell! What's he doing?' and went and checked and he was sitting quietly at the computer asking me what I was doing? It's now 10.10 and we can still feel very faint movement! Now I know why the cat was trying to crawl behind the coffee table earlier.
Geoff Evans
Yes, we felt the earthquake...I was talking to a colleague on the phone, felt the house being jolted and saw stereo speakers sway and shake. Initially, I thought it was from a military plane that was flying over here in Devonport, but reassured I wasn't dreaming when I saw it reported in the Herald just now. Anyway, it's something to discuss with my year 11 geography class tomorrow!
Callum
The earthquake was enough to shake the apartment building I live in on Symonds St. I'm only on the 7th floor, so it wasnt so bad for me, but a friend lives on the 15th floor said his whole room shook and rolled.
shortly afterward, several fire engines showed up around Whitterker Place, and alot of people were out on the st. I'm not exactly sure why, maybe the shake set off a fire alarm in one of the other apartment buildings.
Dave Law
I had too leap off the setee as i thought something living in it - Auckland Museum volcanic House simulation does a great job of preparing you for the feeling; it was exactly like that, a judder and the seat moved. More to come?
Rod
Was sleeping on my bed watching Deaker on sport and suddenly felt my bed shaking. Thought my house was haunted for a while till I realised that it was an earthquake. Will be better prepared next time. Remember to prepare for the worst, helps to have a plan!
Maryon
We felt the earthquake at around 9pm this evening. It shook the windows, well the whole house really, in the way you would shake someone awake. And that is what it did to my daughter, who is a light sleeper. We live in Glendowie. As I have lived in Whakatane, where these things are common place, I thought it would have been around 4 on the Richter scale. We did not feel the lighter quake, so I was waiting for a heavier one to follow the one I felt, but it didn't arrive. A bit of excitement for a Wednesday night!
Lisa
As a prevention to conventional methods of "duck and cover" or the "turtle" position that most of us are advised, most people are actually killed with this method, and should be outlawed and replaced with the "TRIANGLE OF LIFE" this could be a good time to make everyone aware to Doug Copps method of......... "THE TRIANGLE OF LIFE".
If there were to be a more serious quake this method saves just about everyone in a building. his theory is to find a space that will become a void (eg: on the floor beside a sofa) when buildings colaspe rather than being crushed under something. He is extremely experienced with global distasters.
Nigel Wade
On the 17th floor of the gen-i tower the entire floor shook, glass vibrated in the internal walls and outer windows for several minutes. Lifts shut down, and some of the lower lifts do not seem to be operational now due to excessive scaping noises while in operation.
Sylvie Wilkinson
I was resting in my recliner, right here in Pakuranga, when the jolly thing took on a life of its own, and began swaying and rocking. My first impression was that the glass of wine I'd had, was having a delayed reaction, but then became a little worried as I realised it was a quake. You see, we are having major alterations done, and the are very few of the strong proverbial doorways one is supposed to leap under when such things happen. All became calm quite quickly, but in 50 years of living in Auckland, this is the first time I have truly felt the earth move, and didn't even have to get out of my chair!!!
Tiger
Whilst attending a Buddhist teaching in Avondale this evening, my mother felt the rumble as a pile of gemstones placed in a bowl on the palms of a Buddha statue started to flow over quite unexpectedly. It wasn't until she was in the midst of driving into our garage that she received a phone call from her friend who told her about the quakes. Luckily for us at home, my Dad and I felt nothing, although my mother was quite, well, shaken.
Sally Rose-Innes, Northcote
Wow,"I felt the earth move under my feet!" was all I could think as I wrote an email to a friend. I realised the chest of drawers on my left side had moved closer towards me then away again. Almost in slow motion I stepped outside to see if anyone else in my neighbourhood had felt it, but there was nothing and noone there. Finally I checked your website in case I had lost my mind!
Anne Macnaughtan
Phones taken out in Whangaparaoa and dryer door shaken open while drying.
Dan
My wife & I felt our house moving back & forth in Glenfield. Nothing on the TV or radio news yet, good on you NZ Herald for being on to it! Who knows maybe a volcano is about to get started? There has been alot of activity around the mountains this week (Bay of Plenty/ central North Island) but as always scientists say that none of these things are connected even though they always happen in clusters. Coincidence? Yeah right!
Char Gordon
The earthquake at 9.02pm shook my house and even smashed a large window in my daughters bedroom! thankfully it didnt harm anyone.
Thomas
Yeah, we were in a building in the CBD when the quake occured. Our floor vibrated for a couple of seconds. It was quite scary.
Carla
Wow - just logged on to the Herald to make sure that the shaking was real! It felt and sounded like a big gust of wind hit the house only the shaking went on too long. Maybe between 5 & 15 seconds all up?
Kate Thorrat
At 9.01pm, 21st of Feb we felt the house shaking around us 6 or 7 big movements. The family were all watching TV and we just all looked at each other and wonder what that was...very scary!...Dad made us evacuate the house thinking there would be after shocks!
Paulo, Glendowie
Our kids (10 and 8) also jumped out of bed quite scared as the whole house shook for a few seconds. The fear quickly turned into excitement as they realised all was OK and they have experience their first real quake. I guess there will no other subject at "news" tomorrow at school.
Meanwhile our 3 year old slept through the whole thing as nothing has happened. :-)
Wendy
We live at Waihi Beach, in the Bay of Plenty and felt the 9pm earthquake. It went on for quiet along time it seemed.
Tony Topping
Yes shortly after 9pm while watching TV the sofa's we were sitting on shook from side to side and then neighbours dogs began to bark. We are in Pakuranga. This coincides with the strangest morning sky I saw at 6.45am this morning. Over breakfast my wife and I discussed how the atmosphere felt like earthquake potential. Lets hope we all sleep safe tonight.
Maggie
Yes, it gave me a fright...my first experience of a shake! I was upstairs in the study and I felt a shake under my chair, my boy (8 yrs old) called out from his room saying someone is shaking his bed. We just moved into this nearly built house 3 weeks ago and for a moment I thought it was haunted! We live in Albany, Kyle Road to be exact
Andrew Blackler
Living in a pole house we are used to the end of the washing machine spin cycle giving us a tiny shake, this was similar causeing no disturbance. Time for all of us to wake up and look at our earthquake proofing (the water cylinder, book cases etc to be fixed to current standards) as well as reading the ECQ guidelines for what to do... good wake up call!
Hannah
When a big truck passes by the living room floor shakes a bit but today the tables and the shelves were all shaking! First i thought it was a huge truck until i saw the headlines online.
Luiz Paulo Miranda
Just after 9PM I was on the the phone w/ a friend and felt the house shaking as I walked in the bathroom I could see the mirror moving. I asked my friend to hang on for a moment because our house is by the motorway in Forrest Hill, North Shore went to the window to check as sometimes huge construction trucks shake the whole house, nothing outside for my surprise tho. Back to the phone my friend from CBD told me that everyone freaked out, neighboors on their windows and even some asking for help. Does Auckland City have any major plan for Earthquakes and it's consequences?
Sanjay
Live in Albany. Felt absolutely nothing - what earthquake?
Becca Summers
We felt both earthquakes tonight and live at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula. It shook the house quite a bit but nothing major to make anything fall luckily. First time i've ever felt one and was quite scared.
L S Marquez
Living on one of the ridges surrounding Big King park, my partner and I felt a slight shaking for a few seconds followed by a huge BAM, as though a huge truck had hit the side of our house and made the french doors shudder. Then just as quickly as it came, it was over. Having experienced an 8 pointer in my native Philippines that turned walls into paper and caused a wooden staircase to wobble like gelatin, I told my partner to get out of the house quickly. We're perched on the side of the mountain and there might be a danger of the house sliding down the slope. But surprisingly, no one else had rushed out of their houses in our neighborhood - everything was eerily quiet. I found it an unusual quake in that it was very strong, came very suddenly and ended the same way - we felt no aftershocks. I'm waiting for official word from geologists, but that certainly felt more than a 4-pointer to me.
Richard
We're in Pukekohe, felt one quick shake, no noise, not enough to be scary, but enough to wonder what it was.
Jacquie Bird
I was reclining on a lazyboy chair in our lounge, watching TV when it happened - about 15 seconds worth of shaking. I turned around to see if my husband had snuck up on me but nobody was there. Then I noticed that the cats (3) were going a bit feral, backs arched, ears back, tails twitching - quite a surreal experience. I didn't fully realise what it was either until a friend sent me a txt on my cellphone, so then I rung our neighbours to confirm and sure enough they'd felt it too. The upside though is that our seven month old slept right through it !
Mike
fter we felt the strong jolt that lasted a second or two in central Auckland at around 9pm I got online to the official website to see where the quake was, it's magnitude and any associated warnings. Not only was it not reported the website http://www.geonet.org.nz went down within 10 minutes and is still off line 9.43pm. Not confidence building.
Tom
Great to finally have an earthquake in auckland!! was felt in Hillsborough Little shake then a quick jolt. Hopefully we never get a big one up here though!!
Nicky
Was laid on the bed at the time and at first thought it was just a truck or two, but couldn't hear any. Called out to my husband in the other room to see if he felt it, but was playing xbox and thought it was the controller vibrating he felt. Had a visit from next door neighbours after about 10 minutes asking if we felt it and saying their friends all over the shore had felt it too.
The Sander Household
We have felt this evening around 9:02pm a tremor in our house (Mission Bay) which woke up our 2 year old daughter. After checking the internet it was confirmed that an earthquake was reported but did not cause any damage or havoc so there was no need of panic to evacuate our house. We will keep a watch.
Kim
I was sitting at home on 7th floor of my apartment building in central Auckland on Anzac Ave... I felt a little bit of a wobble and then quite a vigorous shaking! My furniture and TV were shaking... quite scary actually! I was more worried about the structural integrity of the brand new apartment building I live in - it shook a bit too much for my liking. Time to move, I think!
Kylie Burling
I was talking on the phone to my mother and we both felt the earthquake simultaneously, although she reacted verbally before I did, so we think it might have been a fraction of a second earlier in Waterview where she is, than in New Lynn where I am. We have phoned around friends and family and found that one person (of three in the same house) felt it in Oratia (the other two did not) and said that he thought it was an explosion somewhere; one in Pakuranga did not, while two others in Pakuranga felt it very definitely, and one in Onehunga did not. My mother in her house, and my husband and I in ours, all felt the same thing - a pulse felt through our feet, and our houses shook one way then the other in the space of about 2 seconds. Very definite earthquake (and yes, we have all lived through significant earthquakes elsewhere in New Zealand, so we recognise them), and my husband's immediate guess was that it would be about 4 on the richter scale. We are wondering whether there is activity at White Island now, or at Ruapehu's lahar, as both have been in the news in recent days.
Michelle Dale
I was lying on my bed this evening talking to my mother on the phone, when all of a sudden my bed starting shaking! I thought it must have been one of the dogs trying to jump up on the bed, but I looked and couldn't see either of them! I got so paranoid that I made my husband come and check under the bed for me, thinking there may be some rodent under the bed shaking it or something else. It was totally bizarre. Think hubby and mum both thought I was bonkers! It wasn't until I came online and clicked on the NZ Herald site and read about the earthquake in Auckland just now! I'm in Sunnyvale, and I DEFINETELY felt it. Thank god I can sleep easy tonight, now knowing there is no rodent in my room!
Trish Bartlett
Yes, 13 of us meeting in our living room in Northcote definitely felt it! We meet together every week in a small group as part of our church, and were just about to start praying when we felt the ground shaking. Definitely added an extra dimension to our prayers!
Kerry
We live in Unsworth Heights and the quake was so bad that I was about to tell the kids to stop shaking the couch. Is this the start of somthing new?
Bede
Was kinda hoping it was Wellington slipping into the ocean. Sad to say its still there :/
Jake
We felt it out as far as Titirangi, Waitakere. The whole house shaked side ways, whilst we were watching lost at the time. Volume wasn't up to loud and our roads too quiet for large trucks!
James
Wellington is fine.
Matt
I've lived in Auckland 27 years and have never felt an earthquake until tonight. It was a very funny feeling. Not scary, but you could tell that a big quake would be.
Ryan
Hell. I lost the plot onthe Lost TV Show.... bugger these tremors. Always get in the way of a good show!!!
Stephen Chester
We are on the sixteenth floor of Scene One Apartments on Quay Street in the City. We felt the quake and the building swayed. Our chandeliers also swayed back and forth, it was very frightening. Lots of people came out on their balconies to find out what had happened.
Jenny
Yes, we felt two very stong sideways jolts, right as the train came into Morningside station, but we knew they were too strong and deep to be related to the train. They felt quite strong and sharp in these flats (I hope we don't get a stronger earthquake living in here!)
Vix
Felt it quite strongly at home in Pakuranga. I was upstairs and first saw the computer monitor shake, then went to go downstairs and it felt like the whole staircase was moving. Flatmate was downstairs and said the couch was moving. Cat unaffected.
Melanie WebberI was on the fourth floor of a heritage apartment building in the central city, and felt the earthquake very strongly - I've lived some years in Wellington, and would describe it as medium sized in the ones I've experienced. There was also a slight aftershock. The effect was most likely magnified by being up in the building. Certainly everyone on the floor who was home stuck their heads out their door for a 'did you feel that?' First earthquake I've ever felt in Auckland.
Belinda
My husband and I felt the earthquake - it was short, but I heard a very loud deep boom, and all at the same time I felt pressure building up in the room and the windows and glasses in the cabinet all rattled. Then it was over as soon as it began. I hope this doesn't mean a larger earthquake with destruction occurred somewhere else, and we were just feeling the shockwaves.
Rebecka Bjelfvenstam Korn
I was watching CSI when I felt a shaking in the house. I live on the 5th floor in CBD Auckland, and I first thought the neighbours had been throwing themselves against the wall for some reason, because the building was squeeking. Then I went out on the balcony to see if anyone else reacted, but everything seemed calm, so I called up my boyfriend and told him I thought there was
