The salvage operation to retrieve the Kestrel has started today.
Work is underway to raise the historic ferry from where it sank at its berth at Wynyard wharf overnight Monday. The operation could take up several weeks to clear the wreckage of the vessel from its mooring at the downtown Auckland wharf.
General manager of Panuku Development Auckland Marinas, Tom Warren, said it was unclear what had caused the Kestrel to sink.
He said there was no obvious evidence as to what had caused the boat to sink, adding that the plan now was to contain the debris and then work on dealing with the wreck and how it is removed.
