Dalefield women's hockey coach Rochelle Retter is taking a relaxed approach leading into her team's Wellington premier division match with Victoria University at Clareville tomorrow despite her halfline being decimated by unavailabilities.
Retter has justifiably taken confidence from her mainly young Dalefield side having won two of their three matches to date-a situation which sees them sitting second on the competition table- and says they will simply have to "step up again."
"Quite honestly it's not life or death, it would be nice to win but if we don't manage that as long as we play well I'll be happy," she said. "Being competitive is the big thing, that's where the focus lies".
Retter admits that losing Amanda Pottinger and Georgia Burton from the halfline is a concern for Dalefield as they both had big games in the win over Karori last weekend and they will also be without the speedy Charlotte Meo and the experienced Jody Graham. "Obviously we won't be at full strength but that's all part of the challenge, isn't it," she said. "It gives others a chance to show what they can do and it will be interesting to see how they cope."
Dalefield men's coach Mark Fenwick is desperate for his side to secure their first win of the season when they continue their Wellington premier division campaign tomorrow, also against Victoria University at Clareville.
Fenwick has been frustrated by the fact that in their last two games Dalefield have gone out to an early lead only to capitulate and be beaten but he agrees Victoria University shouldn't offer the same quality of opposition as the three teams they have met so far&&.Indians, Hutt and Northern United.
"Yes, it should be easier but that doesn't guarantee a result, we have to front up and play good hockey," he said.
Just what will be the composition of Fenwick's starting XI will be hadn't been confirmed at the time these notes were penned with Fenwick saying he had a few things "up his sleeves" in that respect.
"We can't get into the habit of thinking we will score enough goals at one end to make up for what we concede at the other, the midfield defence needs to be more robust and there are ways and means of achieving that," he said.
Youngsters will step up, says confident Retter
