Aspiring chess grandmasters from across Wairarapa fought black on white at the annual Carterton School Chess Tournament on Friday.
Ronny Tankersley, co-organiser of the event alongside Minty Hunter, said 24 four-player teams from primary schools throughout the region played a series of games in two age-grade sections of the contest held at Carterton School on Friday.
Mrs Tankersley, who has helped organise the tournament for the past six years, said the players at the tournament had displayed a gracious competitive spirit - win or lose - and had behaved immaculately during the competition.
"The behaviour of the players was exemplary, even though I don't play the game myself. Snakes and ladders is more my game. I like things a little more straight-forward."
Opaki Aces won the Year 5 and 6 section, with Opaki Masters placing second and Hadlow CheckMaters coming third. The Southend Master Chiefs won the Year 7 and 8 section, Greytown Kings from Greytown School came second and the Martinborough Colts from Martinborough School placed third.
