Josh Williams plays on the wing for the Manukau Rovers under-12 side and has not scored a try this year.
As the team practised for today's match against Marist Eastern, he said losing was "okay, just as long as it's not by more than four tries".
"There are some teams that don't win many games, it must be stink for them."
Ray Taumalolo, 11, said neither he nor his friends knew winning margins were capped.
He can't remember his team ever swapping players but doesn't have a problem with it.
"I reckon they should kick off the good players to make it a bit more even.
It would get boring winning every week but it's not fun when you lose the game by heaps, so this is pretty fair and maybe gives the other team a chance to win."
